Job Information Job Title: Bridge Design Engineer Job Requisition ID: 84760 Ministry: Transportation and Economic Corridors Location: Edmonton Full or Part-Time: Full Time Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week Permanent/Temporary: Permanent Scope: Open Competition Closing Date: July 9, 2026 Classification: Opted out and Excluded Engineering and Related level 2 Salary: $3,525.22 to $4,880.90 bi-weekly ($92,008β$127,391/year) Role Responsibilities Develop and Maintain Structural Engineering Standards Contribute to the development, implementation, and maintenance of structural design standards, procedures, and guidelines for highway bridges and related structures. Support updates to key documents such as Bridge Structures Design Criteria, Bridge Load Evaluation Manual, and Bridge Culvert Design Guidelines. Assist in creating and maintaining standard and typical detail drawings used in bridge design projects.
Capture and Transfer Technical Knowledge Continuously build technical expertise through research, training, conferences, and committee participation. Capture emerging engineering knowledge and best practices to support continuous improvement. Share technical knowledge with internal staff and external consultants through meetings, workshops, training sessions, and other forums.
Provide Technical Expertise and Engineering Support Provide expert advice to internal and external stakeholders on complex structural engineering issues, including interpretation of codes and provincial standards. Support bridge design, construction, and rehabilitation projects by reviewing reports, design briefs, and detailed design submissions. Contribute to in-house design work and engineering reviews to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with standards.
Support Standard Drawings and CAD Development Assist with the preparation and updating of standard bridge drawings using CAD software. Support the maintenance and evolution of departmental CAD standards. Required Qualifications University graduation in Engineering or Applied Science or Geology or Geophysics, or graduation from a recognized School of Architecture, plus five years related experience in bridge design and structural engineering; or equivalent as described below.
Eligible for membership with the APEGA. Class 5 Driverβs License. Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Additional Assets Master's in structural engineering or related. Experience with Alberta standards and infrastructure. Familiarity with other areas of bridge engineering (e.g. planning, fabrication, construction, and preservation).
Experience using Computer Aided Design and Drafting software (CADD). Term of Employment: Permanent, Full-time position. Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
