The Accounting Manager is a senior individual contributor and team lead responsible for overseeing the full-cycle accounting operations of a group of related companies operating in the construction, equipment, and property rental industries.

This role is accountable for accounts payable, accounts receivable, month‑end close, cash management, statutory compliance, and year‑end support across multiple entities. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the successful candidate will supervise one direct report while providing hands‑on leadership in day‑to‑day accounting operations.

Responsibilities

Accounts Payable

  • Manage monthly accounts payable payment runs across multiple entities, ensuring timely and accurate vendor payments.
  • Coordinate payment runs based on project cash flow and funding availability.
  • Verify vendor and subcontractor banking information prior to payment release as a key fraud‑prevention control.
  • Monitor corporate credit card activity across the organization and process payments in accordance with payment terms.

Accounts Receivable & Project Billing

  • Prepare and issue client invoices, including reviewing and validating billing applications before submission.
  • Prepare monthly billings for rental or recurring revenue operations.
  • Attend monthly internal billing meetings to ensure approved change orders and out‑of‑scope work are included in billing applications.
  • Record customer payments and apply cash receipts across all entities.
  • Prepare required statutory or compliance documentation for monthly invoice submissions.
  • Track and coordinate required notices between clients and subcontractors in accordance with applicable regulations.

Cash Flow & Banking

  • Maintain ongoing cash flow reporting.
  • Own bank reconciliations and maintain the online banking portals.

Month‑End Close

  • Lead the accounting team through month‑end close procedures.
  • Review and resolve financial variances to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Reconcile operating expenses and prepare intercompany invoices as required.

Statutory Compliance

  • Prepare and file required periodic returns for HST, EHT, and source deductions.

Year‑End Support

  • Assist with year‑end close activities, including balance sheet reconciliations, working paper preparation, and supporting schedules.
  • Coordinate with finance leadership and external accountants to ensure year‑end adjustments are accurately reflected in the financial statements.

Leadership & Team Supervision

  • Supervise accounting team member(s), providing daily guidance, coaching, work allocation, and review.
  • Support process improvements and promote accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement within the accounting function.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive full‑cycle accounting experience, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and month‑end close.
  • Experience supporting multiple legal entities.
  • Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
  • Strong reconciliation and problem‑solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of HST preparation and filing requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and openness to change as business needs evolve.

Preferred

  • Construction industry accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of construction billing applications, statutory declarations, lien legislation, and holdback requirements.
  • Experience using Jonas Premier Construction Software.
  • Experience using RBC Express for banking administration and payment verification.
  • Previous experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff.
  • Post‑secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • CPA designation (completed or in progress) is considered an asset.
