About the Role

The Accountant is a senior role within the administration team, with responsibility for the day‑to‑day financial operation of the School. They will provide prudent financial management and support to ensure the future sustainability of the school as a well‑resourced and viable entity.

The Accountant is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of all financial and accounting procedures to current accounting standards, assistance with the preparation and implementation of budgets, the maintenance of accounting records, the supervision of control procedures and the preparation of appropriate management accounts. The position provides professional oversight and leadership to the Family Accounts Officer, the Accounts Payable Officer and the Payroll Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly financial reports
  • Monitor government grant expenditure and income
  • Prepare cash flow reports and statutory returns
  • Assist with the preparation of end of year annual accounts, audit and returns

Budgeting and Planning

  • Assist the Business Manager to prepare the long‑term financial strategic plans and annual budget
  • Liaise with budget controllers and monitor department budgets and actual spend

Accounts Receivable

  • Research and resolve payment discrepancies
  • Monitor customer account details for non-payments, delayed payments or other irregularities
  • Monitor and analyse ageing reports

Accounts Payable

  • Supervise and manage Accounts Payable processes including processing of invoices and payments
  • Review, and amend as necessary, invoice general ledger allocations
  • Review and process credit card transactions
  • Review and authorise payments in a correct and timely manner
  • Supervise appropriate management of all financial documentation

Payroll

  • Oversee and review payroll processing and review month end journals
  • Ensure that payroll, superannuation, leave and fringe benefits are accurately recorded and reconciled
  • Review PAYG reconciliation, superannuation and wage accruals on a monthly basis
  • Monitor and process Workers Compensation payments

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain robust audit records and work with auditors as required
  • Coordinate relief finance staff as required
  • Ensure security, integrity and confidentiality of data
  • Comply with audit requirements, financial governance frameworks and delegated authority structures
  • Strong working relationships are maintained
  • Financial systems and digital tools are used effectively to support efficiency, accuracy and compliance

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel

Well‑developed organisational and time management skills

Qualifications and Experience

  • Current Working with Children Check
  • Relevant tertiary qualification necessary
  • Accounting experience and proven record as a prudent financial manager
  • A working knowledge of relevant financial, accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll processes, accounting regulations, standards and policies, combined with a demonstrated ability to interpret and apply them
  • Knowledge of the independent school sector an advantage
  • A Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check current to within 3 months prior to commencement of employment at St Mark’s

Experience with the below programmes is desirable

  • Microsoft D365 Business Central
  • Document Capture
