About The Role Crunchyroll is growing and changing, presenting unique challenges and opportunities to support millions of anime fans around the world. The Data Engineering team provides seamless help to our internal stakeholders, ensuring an exceptional experience for all Crunchyroll fans. As a Senior Database Engineer, you will maintain and enhance the reliability of our data infrastructure.

Your work will directly impact the availability and performance of our data services, enabling the organization to make data‑driven decisions. You will collaborate with data engineers and software engineers to develop and drive 100 % automation, best practices for deep monitoring and alerting. In this role you will report to the Director of Data Engineering.

Positions are available in Los Angeles, CA and San Francisco, CA. About You ​Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. 8+ years of experience in site reliability engineering, database operations, or a related role with focus on data platforms, data stores, data operations. Experience with AWS cloud platform and its data‑related services.

Proficiency with monitoring tools (Datadog, CloudWatch, DevOps Guru, DB Performance Insights). Proficiency in one or more programming languages (Python, Java). Strong understanding of performance metrics at both high and low level (e.g., Disk/IO saturation).

Experience identifying and eliminating bottlenecks in systems. Strong understanding of database internals (types of indexes, schemas, query plans). Experience managing large‑scale data infrastructures (SQL, NoSQL).

Basic knowledge of automation frameworks (Terraform, Cloud Formation). Basic knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DataOps practices. Experience with data governance, compliance, and lifecycle management.

Strong problem‑solving skills and proactive approach to issues. Ability to work independently and own projects while collaborating effectively. Strong communication skills; ability to mentor and guide junior engineers.

About The Team The Database Engineering team ensures reliability, scalability, and performance of our data infrastructure. We standardize monitoring and alerting across all datastores, track key metrics like errors, latency, throughput, and ensure critical systems are covered. We lead efforts to keep databases up‑to‑date, implement Infrastructure as Code for high availability and performance, and automate key processes to enhance operational efficiency.

We evangelize 100 % automation, document operational requirements, develop incident response processes, and automate monitoring and compliance checks to maintain a secure and reliable data environment. We continuously improve load testing and optimize data governance practices to support overall health and efficiency.
