Design Engineer – Trommel Engineering & Detailing (SolidWorks / ANSYS / 3DEXPERIENCE) Help engineer the future of sustainable mining At FLS, our MissionZero ambition is focused on enabling zero-emissions mining. We’re looking for a technically strong Design Engineer to join our global Mining Products Engineering Department , supporting the end-to-end design and development of trommel systems and consumables .

This role is ideal for someone with strong SolidWorks capability , proven experience in finite element analysis (ANSYS) , and a background in heavy mechanical or structural design . About the Role As part of our Consumables Engineering Team , you will be responsible for the end-to-end design, detailing, and optimisation of trommel systems and associated consumables . This is a hands-on engineering and detailing role , working across global engineering, manufacturing, and product teams .

You will take ownership of designs from concept through to manufacture and field performance , ensuring solutions are robust, manufacturable, and aligned to operational requirements. Key Responsibilities Develop detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD Perform and interpret finite element analysis (FEA) using ANSYS to validate structural integrity and optimise designs Design and detail trommel systems and consumables , including:rotating drumsframes and support structuresinternal components and wear elements Deliver end-to-end engineering , from concept development through to manufacturing and in-field performance feedback Produce complete and accurate manufacturing drawing packages , including:general arrangements (GA)fabrication drawingsweld detailsmachining drawingsbills of materials (BOMs) Work within ENOVIA / 3DEXPERIENCE for data management, revision control, and global collaboration Ensure designs consider:structural integritymanufacturabilitytolerances and fitsmaterial selection and wear performancetransport and installation constraints Collaborate with manufacturing and site teams to support:fabricationassemblyinstallationtroubleshooting and continuous improvement Review and optimise designs based on:FEA outcomessite feedbackperformance and wear datacost and manufacturability improvements Maintain CAD standards, libraries, and engineering documentation Identify design risks early and implement practical, robust engineering solutions What You Bring Core Requirements Strong, hands-on experience in SolidWorks (3D modelling and drafting) — a key requirement Proven experience using ANSYS (or equivalent FEA tools) for structural analysis and validation — essential Experience producing detailed fabrication and manufacturing drawings Background in heavy mechanical, structural, or mining-related design Strong understanding of:structural behaviour and load pathsfabrication and welding methodstolerances and fits Ability to translate engineering concepts into practical, buildable designs High attention to detail and engineering accuracy Highly Regarded (but not essential) Experience with trommel systems , rotating equipment, or bulk materials handling equipment Experience in mining or mineral processing environments Exposure to 3DEXPERIENCE / ENOVIA (PLM systems) Experience designing wear components or consumables Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering , Design Engineering , or equivalent Typically 5+ years’ experience in design engineering or a similar role Personal Attributes Strong analytical and problem-solving capability Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively Strong communication skills and ability to work across global teams High level of ownership and accountability for engineering outcomes Continuous improvement mindset with a focus on performance, safety, and reliability Excellent verbal and written English communication skills Why Join FLS This is an opportunity to work on critical rotating equipment and consumables , where your designs directly impact plant performance, reliability, and sustainability outcomes .
