About The Team We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Backend Platform organization. In this role, you will build and improve the foundational systems, tooling, and platform capabilities that support engineering across the company. You will work on shared services, internal developer workflows, production readiness, observability, and platform automation that help teams build and operate software more effectively.

What You Will Do Design, build, and maintain platform tooling, automation, and services that improve engineering efficiency, system reliability, and operational excellence. Contribute to the design, operation, and evolution of foundational backend systems, shared services, and platform capabilities used by multiple teams. Improve observability across backend services through better logging, monitoring, alerting, dashboards, and production diagnostics.

Partner with product engineering, infrastructure, and other platform teams to identify platform gaps, operational bottlenecks, and scalability challenges, and deliver durable solutions. Build and improve internal tools, workflows, and automation that support software development, testing, deployment, and service operations. Support platform initiatives such as service hardening, migrations, modernization, and production readiness improvements.

Advocate for best practices in software quality, testing, deployment safety, observability, and infrastructure automation. Write clean, maintainable, and well‑tested code, and participate actively in code reviews and technical design discussions. Your Profile 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with meaningful experience in backend systems, platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, or developer tooling.

Strong programming experience in at least one backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python. Solid understanding of distributed systems, service architecture, APIs, and production operations. Experience operating services in cloud‑native environments, including AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes.

Hands‑on experience with observability, reliability, and deployment tooling, including logging, monitoring, alerting, CI/CD systems, and incident response workflows. Working knowledge of infrastructure‑as‑code and declarative tooling such as Terraform, Helm, or Kustomize. Experience with platform security engineering, including Kubernetes security, container hardening, IAM, policy enforcement, or cloud security controls.

Experience using AI‑assisted development workflows and tools to accelerate software delivery, improve code quality, and enhance debugging, testing, or operational efficiency. Strong understanding of software testing practices, deployment safety, production readiness, and general platform engineering fundamentals. Demonstrates Turo’s values through work product and within day‑to‑day team interactions.

Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field and relevant industry experience. Equivalent practical experience is also welcome. Bonus If You Have Experience with incident management, postmortems, and reliability improvement efforts in production environments.

Experience operating high‑availability systems or supporting zero‑downtime migrations. Familiarity with event‑driven or asynchronous systems such as Kafka/MSK, Kinesis, or SQS. Experience building internal tools, CLIs, GitHub Actions, or workflow automation used by other engineers.

Familiarity with platform security and cloud security tools such as Wiz, Semgrep. Experience modernizing legacy backend systems or improving shared platform architecture at scale. Compensation For this role, the target base salary range in San Francisco is $156,000–$195,000 annually.

This role is also eligible for equity and benefits. In general, our ranges reflect the market‑based target for new hire salaries based on the level and location of the role. Within the range, individual pay is determined by objective factors assessed during the application and interview process, such as job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
