Senior Backend Engineer (AWS, Java/Spring Boot, Python & Node.js)

About the Role

Zeno is building the backend platform that powers our EV battery-swapping ecosystem — covering vehicle telemetry, swap station orchestration, wallet & payment transactions, fleet partner management, and dashboard identity/RBAC. We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to own the architecture and lead development of our core microservices, deployed on AWS, using Java/Spring Boot, Python, and Node.js.

What you'll do

• Architect, design, and lead development of core backend microservices — Vehicle Service, Swap Station Service, Transaction Management Service, and Wallet Management Service — using Java/Spring Boot, Python (FastAPI/Flask), and Node.js (Express)
• Own the design of the wallet/ledger subsystem — wallet balances, holds, and ledger entries — ensuring idempotent, auditable financial transaction processing
• Design and scale ingestion pipelines that process high-volume vehicle and swap-station telemetry (UDP messages) into ClickHouse, including materialized views, hourly/daily rollups, and TTL-based data lifecycle policies
• Architect and manage deployment infrastructure on AWS (ECS, RDS, SQS, SNS, S3, Secrets Manager, IAM, CloudWatch, WAF, Route 53)
• Drive the use of Redis for low-latency live data serving, including optimizing placement within the VPC to reduce cross-AZ/network data transfer costs
• Define API contracts, service boundaries, and event-driven communication patterns (SQS/SNS) across microservices
• Design and review database schemas (PostgreSQL/RDS) for core domains — customers, vehicles, fleet partners, battery packs, swap stations, tariffs, and dashboard identity/RBAC
• Establish and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, ECR) and infrastructure best practices
• Lead incident response and root-cause analysis, including design of dead-letter queue (DLQ) handling for failed or incomplete transaction processing
• Mentor mid-level and junior engineers, lead code reviews, and set backend engineering standards
• Collaborate with product, frontend (Next.js dashboard), and DevOps teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical designs
• Own the performance, security and reliability of production services at scale

What you have

• 10+ years of experience in backend software engineering, with a proven track record of designing and operating production systems at scale
• Strong hands-on expertise in Java and Spring Boot for building production microservices
• Proficiency in Python and/or Node.js for backend service development
• Deep experience with AWS cloud services — ECS, RDS, SQS, SNS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, Secrets Manager
• Strong understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL) and time-series/columnar databases (ClickHouse or similar)
• Experience designing event-driven and message-queue-based architectures
• Solid understanding of financial/ledger system design, idempotency, and transactional integrity
• Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, ECS/Kubernetes)
• Strong grasp of system design, scalability, and distributed systems principles
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices (GitHub Actions or similar)
• Excellent communication skills and experience mentoring engineering teams

Nice to Have

• Experience in IoT/telemetry-heavy domains (vehicle, industrial, or connected-device platforms)
• Familiarity with Redis for caching or low-latency data serving
• Experience with API gateways/service mesh (Envoy Proxy)
• Exposure to payment gateway integrations and wallet/ledger systems
• AWS Solutions Architect Professional certification (or equivalent)
• Experience in EV, mobility, or fleet management domains
