z/OS Mainframe Storage Engineer

Overview

In this role you will manage and optimize enterprise mainframe storage for IBM z/OS environments, ensuring high availability and resilience. You will work cross-functionally to design, install, and operate storage platforms, including disk, tape, backup, and disaster recovery solutions. The position emphasizes capacity planning, automation, and ongoing modernization to support mission-critical systems.

You will join a collaborative, innovation-driven team within a global technology services leader. This is a hands-on role with a clear impact on reliability, performance, and security of storage infrastructure.

• Manage mainframe disk and storage administration including provisioning, upgrades, restorations, and ongoing support
• Conduct daily operations: health checks, incident management, monitoring, and issue resolution
• Plan storage capacity expansions and infrastructure changes
• Configure and maintain storage resources for databases, VSAM, work datasets, and sort spaces
• Administer storage management products (e.g., CA Disk and related utilities)
• Install, test, and maintain storage hardware and software solutions
• Plan and perform IODF maintenance, LPAR configuration, and HMC administration
• Administer backup, recovery, archival, and disaster recovery solutions
• Utilize SMP/E and z/OSMF for software maintenance and deployment
• Manage storage volume allocation, capacity, and utilization reporting
• Participate in disaster recovery testing and exercises
• Perform root cause analysis for storage incidents and implement preventive actions
• Collaborate with systems programming, network, database, and application teams
• Leverage automation tools (NetView, System Automation SA z/OS, CA OPS/MVS) to improve efficiency
• Automate repetitive storage tasks and contribute to infrastructure modernization
• Design and support IBM zSeries storage architectures and solutions
• Ensure compliance with security, governance, and operational standards
• Maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and procedures

• Typically 8 to 15+ years of experience in Mainframe Infrastructure and z/OS Storage Administration
• Hands-on IBM z/OS storage experience in large-scale enterprises
• Expertise with IBM DS8000 series (DS8870, DS8K family), DSCLI, GDPS, PPRC Metro Mirror, DFHSM, DFDSS, ICKDSF, SMS, RMM Customization, and z/OS IODF Administration
• Experience installing and upgrading storage hardware and software
• Knowledge of Mainframe Disk Storage Management, Storage Provisioning, Capacity Planning, Backup & Recovery, and Disaster Recovery
• Experience with TS7720 Virtual Tape Systems, Storage Grid Architectures, PPRC replication
• Experience with EMC DLm Virtual Tape systems (installation, upgrade, configuration)
• Familiarity with Broadcom/Brocade storage networking and FICON connectivity
• Strong knowledge of: z/OS, JCL, Job Scheduling, Mainframe Storage Infrastructure
• Experience using SMP/E and z/OSMF for maintenance and deployment
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
