Job Description

Exam students are the most honest students you will ever have. There is a date, there is a score, and either they got it or they did not. If that appeals to you rather than frightening you, read on.

We are hiring an English exam preparation teacher in Buenos Aires for Cambridge B2 First and C1 Advanced, IELTS Academic and General Training, and TOEFL iBT.

Who your students are

Argentines with a deadline. Someone applying to a master’s in Europe who needs a 7.0 overall with no band under 6.5. A doctor whose registration abroad depends on it. A professional whose company will pay for the C1 Advanced certificate but not for a second attempt. A seventeen year old whose school programme ends in the Cambridge exam.

They do not need general English lessons. They need the exam taken apart.

What you would actually do

  • Teach exam preparation courses and one to one intensives, at our Maipú 464 campus and online.
  • Diagnose from a real mock, not from a feeling, and tell the student what their honest current band is even when it is not what they hoped.
  • Teach the exam as a technique on top of the language: task types, timing, what the marker is actually rewarding, and where free marks are being thrown away.
  • Mark writing against the official band descriptors and give feedback specific enough to change the next attempt.
  • Run speaking practice under real conditions, including the part everyone avoids because it is uncomfortable.
  • Keep the schedule pointed at the exam date, working backwards from it.

What we look for

  • English at C1 or above, and a genuine command of the exams you claim. Knowing IELTS is not the same as knowing Cambridge, so tell us which ones you actually know.
  • Demonstrable results: candidates you prepared and what they scored. This is the rare teaching job where you can prove your record, so please do.
  • Experience teaching adults, and the tact to tell somebody their writing is a 6.0 when they were told it was a 7.0 elsewhere.
  • A TEFL, CELTA, TESOL or profesorado, or equivalent classroom experience.
  • The right to work in Argentina, and the ability to teach in person in the centre of Buenos Aires.

A real advantage: Cambridge or IELTS examiner experience, experience with TOEFL iBT specifically, or a track record with academic writing.

Hours and pay

Demand peaks around the exam sessions, so the hours rise and fall through the year and we will be straight with you about that instead of pretending it is flat. Paid per class hour, monthly. Concrete numbers at the interview, before any commitment.

About Vamos Academy

Vamos Academy has been teaching in Buenos Aires since 2004 and in Málaga since 2023, plus online and in companies. Our students rate us 4.9 out of 5 across 1,187 Google reviews and we hold a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice award for 2025. We also run our own accredited TEFL course here, so if you want to move into teacher training later, the path exists inside the building.

Questions we get asked

Do I need to know all three exams?
No. Tell us which ones you know properly. We would rather have somebody excellent at IELTS than somebody vague about everything.

Is it in person or online?
Both. Exam students often start online and move in person as the date gets close, and some stay online the whole way.

Can I teach general English too?
Yes. Most of our exam teachers carry a mix, and we have other English roles open at the same time.
