Anaesthetic Theatre Nurse

Responsibilities

Deliver safe, effective, evidence-based nursing care to adult and paediatric patients undergoing anaesthesia.

Assist the anaesthetist with the preparation, induction, maintenance and emergence from anaesthesia, including airway management and patient monitoring.

Prepare, check and maintain anaesthetic equipment, medications and supplies in line with hospital policies and manufacturer guidelines.

Continuously assess and monitor patients, recognising changes in clinical condition and escalating concerns promptly and appropriately.

Apply appropriate paediatric assessment and escalation tools, including PEWS, to identify and respond to patient deterioration.

Promote patient-centred care, safeguarding the comfort, dignity, privacy and emotional wellbeing of adult and paediatric patients and their families.

Work collaboratively with anaesthetists, surgeons, theatre and recovery teams to ensure effective communication, coordination and continuity of care.

Maintain accurate clinical documentation, handovers and patient records, while adhering to NMBI standards, hospital policies and clinical governance requirements.

Participate in quality improvement, clinical audits, risk management, incident reporting and the development of perioperative policies and procedures.

Maintain professional competence through continuous professional development, mandatory training and skills updates, while supporting students, new staff and maintaining a safe, infection-controlled clinical environment.

Requirements

NMBI Registration: Be registered, or eligible for registration, in the relevant division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

Clinical Experience: Have a minimum of 3 years post-registration nursing experience, including at least 1 year in the relevant speciality or a related clinical area.

Clinical & Administrative Skills: Demonstrate the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity required to effectively perform the duties of the role.

Professional Development: Demonstrate a commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and evidence-based nursing practice.

Mandatory Registration & Fitness: Maintain current annual NMBI registration, including completion of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC), and be medically fit and of good character to undertake the role.

Post-Specific Competencies: Demonstrate competence in clinical assessment, airway management, perioperative anaesthetic support and clinical information systems. Current BLS certification is required, with PALS and ACLS desirable.

Specialist Qualification: A postgraduate qualification in Anaesthetic Nursing or Paediatric Nursing is desirable, or candidates should demonstrate willingness to undertake relevant specialist education.
