Job Summary

Created in 2020, the Total Portfolio Group (TPG) is tasked with stewarding the Fund’s overall portfolio composition to ensure HOOPP delivers on its pension promise over the long term. TPG serves as the CIO’s central team on total fund issues, covering macroeconomic insights, portfolio construction and allocation, analytics, and total portfolio management including liquidity and currency policies. As part of HOOPP’s 2030 Strategic Plan, the transition to a Total Portfolio Approach (TPA) is central to improving the adaptability, integration, and value-add of fund-level decisions.

TPG plays a central role in building and testing TPA indicators, enhancing decision-support frameworks, and ensuring cross-asset insights are embedded across the total fund. Technology and data are critical enablers of this strategy, and TPG works closely with the CIO, senior leadership, and cross-functional partners on initiatives spanning portfolio construction, analytics, liquidity, and risk, while also advancing the integration of AI into decision support to strengthen resilience and long‑term performance.

What you will do

  • The intern will work alongside a high-caliber team with backgrounds in Investments, Finance, Statistics, Quantitative Analysis, and Data Science.
  • This role offers exposure to the CIO and senior leadership, and is well-suited for students seeking experience in total portfolio management, strategic asset allocation, risk governance, and investment analytics.
  • The intern will support TPG’s TPA implementation efforts, including proof-of-concept (POC) work on TPA indicators, reporting automation, and portfolio analytics.
  • They will contribute to the development of both top-down portfolio construction tools and bottom-up investment analytics, leveraging HOOPP’s Aladdin risk system as well as in-house platforms.
  • The intern will also be supporting AI and technology planning initiatives.
  • This is an opportunity to gain practical experience at the intersection of portfolio strategy, investment technology and data analytics, and investment decision-making.
  • Assist in developing and testing TPA-related indicators and dashboards, including proof-of-concept work to support fund‑level decision making.
  • Contribute to proof-of-concept work for AI‑enabled tools that enhance decision making, reporting automation, and portfolio analytics.
  • Design and build reporting and visualization tools (e.g., in Power BI) related to portfolio risk, exposures, and liquidity.
  • Support the automation of daily and periodic processes in Python and VBA, including investigation, reconciliation and error checking of key metrics.
  • Leverage the BlackRock Aladdin system and internal tools to generate portfolio insights and conduct what‑if analysis for total fund positioning.
  • Collaborate with HOOPP’s technology team on investment technology and initiatives, ensuring consistency across systems.
  • Assist in preparing materials for senior management and committees, translating technical analysis into clear, decision‑useful insights.
  • Perform ad hoc research on markets, risk methodologies, and portfolio construction challenges.

What you will bring

  • Enrolled in a university program in Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Finance, or another quantitative discipline.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, with experience in data manipulation, analytics, and automation.
  • Experience with Power BI and/or other data visualization tools.
  • Interest in investment technology, data platforms, and AI applications in finance.
  • Familiarity with VBA and Excel (including handling large datasets).
  • Knowledge of investment risk systems such as Aladdin is an asset.
  • Strong numeracy, intellectual curiosity, and a passion for financial markets.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills, with attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Progress toward CFA or FRM designation is an asset.

The expected hourly rate range for this role is $26.00 to $40.00 The actual hourly rate offered to the successful candidate may vary based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, individual's expertise and level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered.
