Sneior COBOL Developer Contract Location: Dublin / Hybrid (1 day per week onsite)

This role would suit someone who is not only strong technically, but also comfortable working closely with business stakeholders, analysing existing systems, defining change impact, and supporting junior developers within the team.
The Job
You will be responsible for understanding existing legacy systems, gathering and clarifying business requirements, assessing the impact of proposed changes, and working closely with development and testing teams to deliver high-quality solutions. This is a hands‑on role with a strong leadership element, requiring someone who can take ownership of technical delivery while also mentoring more junior team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, enhance, and maintain COBOL-based applications
- Analyse existing systems and understand current-state functionality
- Work with business stakeholders to gather and clarify requirements
- Assess the scope, impact, and risks of proposed system changes
- Collaborate with backend developers, testers, and wider delivery teams
- Support solution design and technical decision‑making
- Mentor and guide junior developers
- Troubleshoot production and testing issues
- Ensure code quality, documentation, and delivery standards are maintained
Have You?
- Strong commercial experience as a COBOL Developer
- Experience working in enterprise or large-scale legacy environments
- Ability to understand complex existing systems and business processes
- Strong requirements analysis and impact assessment experience
- Experience working closely with business users, developers, and testers
- Previous lead or mentoring experience
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience in structured delivery environments
- Availability to start around August would be beneficial
Nice to Have
- Experience in financial services, public sector, insurance, or other regulated environments
- Mainframe experience
- Experience with JCL, DB2, CICS, IMS, VSAM, or similar technologies
