Job Description
The Geotechnical Engineer delivers CVST's geotechnical reporting and site classification services, interpreting field and laboratory data to produce clear, technically sound reports. This role suits an engineer with approximately 1-5 years' relevant experience who can work with growing independence while continuing to develop under the guidance of senior engineers. The main focus of the role is preparing site classification and geotechnical reports and interpreting investigation data; during periods of high demand, the role may also be required to assist in CVST's NATA-accredited laboratory with sample preparation and testing.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare site classification and geotechnical reports (e.g. AS 2870) from field and laboratory data, with increasing independence
- Interpret field and laboratory results and apply CVST reporting templates and quality processes consistently
- Ensure reports are accurate, clear, technically sound and defensible
- Liaise with supervising engineers to review, finalise and incorporate feedback on reports
- During periods of high demand, assist in the laboratory with sample preparation and testing in accordance with CVST methods and NATA / ISO/IEC 17025 requirements
- Maintain sample integrity, records and traceability when supporting laboratory activities
- Prepare and contribute to more complex geotechnical reports, with support from senior engineers as required
- Interpret field and test data and undertake geotechnical calculations and analysis
- Assist with and attend site investigations to build practical understanding of how field data informs site classification reports
- Log soil and rock profiles, complete field sheets (including TabLogs) and recover, label and store samples
About you
- Bachelor degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology or a closely related discipline
- Approximately 1-5 years' relevant geotechnical experience, including exposure to site classifications, investigations and/or reporting
- Developing ability to interpret field and laboratory data and prepare geotechnical and site classification reports
- Good written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail
- Ability to follow standard methods, checklists and quality procedures and to work with growing independence
- Current driver's licence and willingness to travel and stay away overnight as required
- Construction Induction (White) Card and current First Aid, or willingness to obtain
- Desirable: Experience in a geotechnical consulting, civil or NATA-accredited laboratory environment
- Desirable: Working knowledge of AS 2870 and AS 1726
- Desirable: Competency in, or willingness to train in, the safe use of nuclear density gauges (NDG)
