An exciting opportunity has arisen with a leading organisation supporting one of Ireland's most advanced marine research programmes. This role offers the chance to work with state-of-the-art scientific technology, supporting research vessels that play a vital role in ocean science, environmental monitoring, and offshore research.
This is a unique position combining hands-on engineering, scientific instrumentation, IT support, and regular time at sea, making it ideal for someone who enjoys practical problem-solving and a varied working environment.
The Role
As an Instrumentation & IT Technician, you will provide technical support for a wide range of scientific survey equipment and onboard IT systems, both ashore and aboard research vessels.
Key responsibilities include:
- Installation, maintenance, calibration and repair of complex scientific and electronic instrumentation.
- Supporting onboard IT, communications and desktop systems.
- Diagnosing and resolving technical faults across instrumentation and networked equipment.
- Preparing, testing and maintaining equipment before and after research surveys.
- Providing technical support during scientific expeditions at sea (approximately 120 days per year).
- Working closely with scientists, engineers and vessel crews to ensure successful research operations.
This is a varied role split between shore-based technical work and offshore deployments, offering excellent exposure to advanced technology in a unique operational environment.
Experience
- Degree in Electronics, Instrumentation, Electrical, Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience maintaining and repairing complex electronic instrumentation or technical equipment.
- Full EU/EEA driving licence.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable
- Experience within marine, offshore or industrial environments.
- Previous seagoing experience.
- Knowledge of scientific or survey instrumentation.
- Desktop and IT support experience within a networked environment.
