Job Title: Controls Engineer / Intermediate Control Systems & Automation Designer
Job Description
This role offers an opportunity for an intermediate Control Systems and Automation Designer to design, program, and implement industrial automation solutions for heavy industrial applications, including bulk material handling and process plants. You will work on a mix of office-based automation and control system design and on-site support, including troubleshooting, re-programming, and commissioning complex control systems. The position offers strong mentorship from a highly technical controls and integration team, clear pathways into leadership, and the chance to contribute to large-scale projects in both the local region and the United States.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop industrial control systems and automation solutions for heavy industrial machinery and bulk material handling applications.
- Program control systems from scratch, including PLC logic and HMI interfaces, rather than solely troubleshooting existing code.
- Rewrite and modify large portions of existing control programs when issues arise, ensuring systems operate safely and efficiently.
- Configure, program, and integrate PLCs, including Schneider PLCs and other industrial platforms, to meet project and client requirements.
- Develop, configure, and maintain HMI applications using platforms such as Wonderware, FactoryTalk, and Ignition.
- Create and review electrical designs, control panel layouts, and related documentation, leveraging CAD tools where applicable.
- Provide on-site support at client facilities, including troubleshooting, commissioning, and resolving automation and control system issues.
- Collaborate closely with electricians, mechanical engineers, millwrights, and other site personnel to implement and support control solutions.
- Work directly with clients on site to understand their requirements, address issues, and build strong, professional working relationships.
- Assist with large-scale projects in the United States, including travel of approximately 20–35% as required for project execution and support.
- Demonstrate leadership qualities and progressively take on a lead role within the controls team to fill an existing leadership gap.
- Support multiple projects in a rapidly growing environment, contributing to planning, coordination, and timely delivery of automation solutions.
- Maintain high standards of integrity, safety, and professionalism in all design, programming, and on-site activities.
- Document control system designs, configurations, and changes clearly to support future maintenance and knowledge sharing.
- Participate in knowledge sharing and mentorship within the team, contributing to a strong, collaborative controls and integration group.
Essential Skills
- Degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related Technologist program.
- P.Eng designation or eligibility for P.Eng registration.
- At least 3+ years of direct experience in industrial, mining, or process plant environments.
- Minimum 3+ years of PLC programming experience, including hands-on development and implementation of control logic (with experience on Schneider PLCs).
- At least 3+ years of experience developing and working with HMIs, including platforms such as Wonderware, FactoryTalk, and Ignition.
- Minimum 3+ years of on-site experience working directly with clients in industrial environments.
- Proven ability to program control systems from scratch, not just troubleshoot existing programs.
- Strong understanding of industrial automation and control systems for heavy industrial machinery and bulk material handling.
- Ability and willingness to travel approximately 20–35% of the time to support projects, including large-scale projects in the United States.
- High integrity, strong character, and the ability to take on and grow into a leadership role.
- Comfort working on site in industrial facilities and interacting with multidisciplinary teams such as electricians, mechanical engineers, and millwrights.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- P.Eng designation (beyond eligibility) considered a strong asset.
- 2+ years of additional experience programming and troubleshooting PLCs beyond the core requirements.
- 2+ years of experience working with CAD software for electrical design and control panel layouts.
- Project management experience, including planning, coordinating, and delivering automation projects.
- Experience with Cenelec-related systems for train or transportation applications considered an asset.
- Background in control systems, automation, and controls technologist roles, including exposure to platforms such as ControlLogix, FactoryTalk, Ignition, Wonderware, and related industrial automation tools.
- Technologists with strong programming skills are encouraged to apply, provided they can demonstrate robust control system programming capabilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with clients and site personnel.
- Motivation to grow within a rapidly expanding organization that promotes from within and offers clear pathways into leadership roles.
