Taxation Accountant
Our client is an established accounting and advisory service provider with over 130 years of experience. The firm provides a broad range of professional services to individual and corporate clients, including audit & assurance, business advisory, corporate finance, restructuring & insolvency, tax services and wealth advisory.
The role is based in the Brisbane office and involves providing services to a diverse client portfolio, including individuals, sole traders, companies, trusts and partnerships. Taxation accounting is the primary occupational focus of the role.
The Role
This is a full-time role with an annual salary of $80,000 - $105,000 plus superannuation, and involves the following tasks:
- Manage taxation and accounting engagements for an allocated portfolio of clients, ensuring work is accurate, properly documented, and completed within statutory and internal deadlines.
- Prepare tax planning strategies, calculations and recommendations for clients, having regard to their financial circumstances, business activities and applicable taxation requirements.
- Prepare business activity statements, income tax returns, instalment activity statements, fringe benefit tax returns, and other taxation or statutory reports/work.
- Examine client income, expenditure, operating costs, asset transactions, and accounting records to calculate taxation liabilities and identify discrepancies, omissions or compliance risks.
- Prepare annual financial statements, taxation reconciliations, adjusting journal entries and review-ready working papers based on client records and supporting documentation.
- Provide practical taxation advice to clients on taxation obligations, including but not limited to income tax, goods and services tax, fringe benefits tax, payroll tax, and transfer duties.
- Review the completeness and accuracy of client financial information to ensure that taxation returns and related financial reports comply with taxation requirements.
- Research and interpret taxation legislation, ATO guidance, and relevant regulatory developments, and explain their practical application to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Liaise with the ATO and other relevant revenue authorities in relation to taxation enquiries, reviews, audits, information requests, objections and disputes, including preparing responses and supporting documentation on behalf of clients.
- Liaise with clients to obtain financial information, resolve accounting queries, explain taxation outcomes, and identify matters requiring additional investigation or specialist advice.
- Assist clients in establishing and maintaining suitable accounting systems, record-keeping procedures and internal financial controls, including the effective use of computer-based and cloud accounting platforms.
- Assess and advise on the taxation consequences and associated cash-flow implications of proposed transactions, asset acquisition and disposals, business restructure, and other significant commercial decisions.
- Provide technical guidance and supervision to accountants and graduates on taxation and accounting matters as required.
Required qualifications and experience:
- An AQF Bachelor's degree or higher qualification in accounting, commerce or a related discipline.
- At least one year of relevant experience working as a Taxation Accountant in a professional setting.
- Has successfully completed CA qualification.
- At least 12 months’ experience in taxation accounting, public practice, business services, corporate tax, or professional accounting advisory work.
- At least 12 months’ experience preparing tax returns, financial statements, tax workpapers, reconciliations, depreciation schedules, BAS, GST, and statutory compliance documents.
- At least 12 months’ experience applying Australian taxation concepts, including income tax, GST, PAYG, FBT, CGT, Division 7A, deductions, losses, business structures, and tax planning.
- At least 12 months’ experience analysing client ledgers, trial balances, payroll records, transaction data, accounting reports, and source documents to identify tax adjustments and compliance risks.
- At least 12 months’ experience liaising with clients, ATO representatives, auditors, advisers, and internal professional teams on complex tax compliance, advisory, documentation, and reporting matters.
- At least 12 months’ experience using accounting, taxation and cloud-based accounting software, particularly MYOB, BGL, XERO and ATO Online Services.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail in preparing taxation returns, financial statements and related compliance work.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex taxation matters clearly to clients.
- Strong client service and relationship-management skills.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet statutory deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a professional accounting team.
- Ability to provide technical guidance and supervision to junior accountants and graduates, where required.
