Job Description
A special educator is a trained teacher who works with children or adults who have disabilities or special educational needs. They assess individual learning needs, develop personalized education plans, and use specialized teaching methods to help learners achieve their full potential.
Roles and responsibilities of a special educator:
- Assess students' learning abilities and needs.
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
- Adapt teaching methods and learning materials.
- Teach academic, social, communication, and daily living skills.
- Collaborate with parents, therapists, and other teachers.
- Monitor students' progress and modify strategies as needed.
- Support inclusion of students with disabilities in mainstream classrooms where appropriate.
A special educator may work with individuals who have:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Intellectual disabilities
- Learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia)
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Hearing or visual impairments
- Speech and language disorders
- Physical disabilities
- Multiple disabilities
