About the role

Hiive runs a secondary marketplace platform designed to facilitate transactions between buyers and sellers of shares in private companies before they go public, effectively bringing much-needed liquidity to the pre-IPO space. The company is seeking an experienced software engineer to join the team and contribute to scaling backend infrastructure while simultaneously enhancing customer-facing application functionality. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with company founders and fellow engineers to directly influence product strategy and technical direction in a dynamic startup environment.

What you'll do

  • Develop, maintain, and optimize production-grade backend code utilizing Elixir, the Phoenix web framework, and Ecto for database interactions and queries.
  • Build and enhance frontend interfaces that serve platform users, ensuring seamless experiences across the application.
  • Design robust data models and architect software solutions with a strong emphasis on system performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Integrate the Hiive platform with external third-party services through API connections and webhook implementations to extend functionality.
  • Construct and secure both internal-facing and external-facing APIs to support various platform operations and partner integrations.
  • Collaborate directly with company founders and engineering colleagues to define product roadmaps and make strategic technical decisions.
  • Navigate and adapt to rapidly changing priorities that are typical within a fast-moving startup organization.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to maintain high code quality standards across the engineering team.
  • Contribute to architectural discussions and help establish best practices for system design and development workflows.
  • Monitor application performance and implement improvements to ensure the platform operates efficiently under increasing user loads.
  • Document technical specifications, API endpoints, and system architectures to support team knowledge sharing and onboarding.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and implement fixes promptly to maintain platform reliability and user trust.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated professional experience developing backend systems using Elixir and the Phoenix framework in production environments.
  • Strong proficiency working with TypeScript and React for frontend development tasks.
  • Hands‑on experience operating within continuous integration and continuous deployment workflows and development pipelines.
  • Dedication to writing comprehensive automated tests for backend systems to ensure code reliability and prevent regressions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities in English for effective collaboration with distributed team members.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a collaborative engineering team.
  • Understanding of software development best practices and modern engineering principles.
  • Comfort working in ambiguous situations and making technical decisions with incomplete information.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience constructing GraphQL APIs using the Absinthe library within the Elixir ecosystem.
  • Background in PostgreSQL database design, schema optimization, and writing performant queries.
  • Previous professional experience working at a fintech startup or within the financial technology sector.
  • Familiarity with secondary markets, trading platforms, or financial services applications.
  • Experience mentoring junior developers or leading technical initiatives within engineering teams.
  • Knowledge of security best practices for financial applications and sensitive data handling.
