About the Role
We are seeking a reliable and hands-on Handyman / Maintenance Person to join our team delivering maintenance and building services across Sydney Metro sites for the Department of Justice, including Correctional Centres and Courthouses.
This role suits someone who takes pride in their trade skills, can work independently, follows procedures closely, and is comfortable working within secure government facilities. Due to the nature of these sites, all applicants must be able to pass strict background and security checks.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out general building maintenance and repairs across multiple sites in Sydney Metro
- Perform general carpentry, painting, gyprock/plasterboard patching and repairs, and other general building works
- Identify maintenance issues, assess the scope of works required, and troubleshoot problems on-site
- Log and manage permits to work, Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), and job close-outs using a computer/phone or maintenance management system
- Follow all site-specific security, access, and safety procedures when working within correctional and justice facilities
- Maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and time on-site
- Liaise professionally with site staff, custodial officers, contractors, and supervisors
- Work safely with hand and power tools, ensuring equipment is maintained and accounted for at secure sites
- Escalate any issues, hazards, or non-compliance matters promptly
Essential Requirements (Must Have)
- Basic computer and smartphone skills, with the ability to log permits, complete SWMS, and close out job records digitally
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify issues and determine appropriate repairs
- Clean criminal record โ must be able to obtain and maintain a valid National Police Check
- Current White Card (Construction Induction Training)
- Willingness and ability to undergo and maintain a Criminal Record Inquiry (CRI) clearance, as required for access to correctional and justice facilities
- Solid hands-on experience using general trade tools and equipment
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Fluent English speaker
- Practical experience in general carpentry, painting, gyprock/plasterboard patching, and general building maintenance
- Current driver's licence and own reliable transport (for travel between Sydney Metro sites)
- Ability to pass site-specific security screening and inductions for correctional and court facilities
Desirable
- Experience working within correctional, justice, government, or other high-security environments
- Trade qualification or relevant experience in carpentry, painting, or building maintenance
- Experience using maintenance management or job-logging software/apps
- Additional trade tickets (e.g. working at heights, confined spaces)
