Summary The Flying Fig is a well-known café and deli inspired by traditional Jewish-style delicatessens, offering a distinctive handmade dining experience in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The business is recognised for its signature bagels, smoked meats, Reuben sandwiches, fresh salads, and specialty coffee, all prepared with a strong focus on quality, flavour, and authenticity.
Much of the menu is made in-house using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, including house-cured meats, pickles, and crafted beverages. The Flying Fig places a strong emphasis on consistency, product quality, and friendly customer service, delivering a dining experience that combines traditional techniques with modern café culture. Website: We are seeking a full-time Cafe Manager with at least 1 year of relevant experience and a relevant diploma.
This role reports to the Director, Thomas. The typical job responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Managing day-to-day café operations, ensuring all standard operating procedures, checklists, and opening/closing duties are completed.
- Recruiting, training, supervising, and mentoring front-of-house and back-of-house staff to maintain high standards of customer service and operational performance.
- Preparing weekly staff rosters, monitoring attendance, and arranging suitable replacements to ensure adequate staffing levels.
- Developing and implementing customer retention and marketing strategies, including managing the café's online presence through Google Business Profile, Instagram, and Facebook.
- Planning and organising special functions collaboration with chefs and owners.
- Suggesting new menu items based on customer preferences and work with the Head Chef, including seasonal offerings, while ensuring budget and profitability.
- Monitoring inventory levels, conducting regular stocktakes, and ordering food, beverages, and other café supplies to maintain appropriate stock levels.
- Ensuring all café expenses remain within budget and identifying ways to reduce operational costs.
- Establishing and reviewing menu pricing and the pricing of purchased goods to achieve financial objectives while remaining competitive in the market.
- Maintaining accurate records of inventory, purchases, sales, cash handling, and other financial transactions for reporting and audit purposes.
- Inspecting dining areas regularly to confirm compliance with hygiene standards, functionality, and an appealing presentation.
- Engaging with customers to evaluate their dining experience, responding promptly to complaints or feedback, and implementing improvements to enhance customer satisfaction.
- Coordinating the selection process for new waiting and kitchen team members to build a skilled workforce.
- Handling customer reservations, welcoming guests upon arrival, and supporting order-taking during peak times.
- Collaborating with suppliers to negotiate terms and ensure the timely procurement of quality ingredients and equipment.
- Ensuring the cafe comply with health regulations and managing bookings.
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for the role:
- A relevant Diploma
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience
- Proven experience in a café, restaurant, or hospitality management role.
- Strong leadership, communication, and team management skills.
- Excellent organisational and time management abilities.
- Experience in budgeting, stock control, rostering, and cost management.
- Knowledge of food safety, workplace health and safety, and hospitality compliance requirements.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while delivering outstanding customer service.
- Proficiency in POS systems and basic computer applications.
- Knowledge of Jewish-style cuisine and halal food preparation practices will be highly regarded.
- Ability to work a rotating roster, including weekends, public holidays, and opening or closing shifts.
Fixed rostered days will be provided where practicable.
