Smith Engineering Inc. is a growing structural engineering, forensic engineering, and building science consulting firm specializing in the investigation of building failures and the design of restoration solutions following significant property losses. Working with insurance companies, adjusters, lawyers, contractors, property owners, and restoration professionals, our Professional Engineers investigate damaged buildings, determine the cause and extent of structural damage, and develop practical, cost-effective, Ontario Building Code-compliant repair solutions.

About the Role Reporting to the Operations Manager , the Structural Engineering EIT is an integral member of our engineering team, working closely with our Professional Engineers, Engineering Technicians, and Drafting team. This position combines structural engineering, forensic investigations, building assessments, restoration design, project coordination, and client interaction.
You will receive direct mentorship from experienced Professional Engineers while developing the technical, field, and consulting skills required to obtain your Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation. This is an outstanding opportunity for an ambitious Engineer-in-Training looking to build a long-term career in structural engineering, restoration consulting, and forensic engineering. Key Responsibilities Conduct on-site structural assessments of buildings damaged by fire, water, impact, wind, structural movement, and other insured property losses.
Perform detailed site inspections, measurements, photographic documentation, and field investigations. Assist Professional Engineers in determining the cause, extent, and nature of structural damage. Prepare engineering calculations and assist with structural analysis and design.
Develop practical structural repair recommendations and restoration solutions. Prepare engineering reports, technical correspondence, repair specifications, and scopes of work. Review structural drawings, architectural drawings, and supporting documentation.
Coordinate projects with engineers, clients, insurance adjusters, contractors, municipal officials, and other project stakeholders. Assist with Ontario Building Code research and engineering design compliance. Review municipal comments and assist with permit applications and revisions.
Work closely with the drafting team to prepare accurate Revit models, permit drawings, and construction documents. Participate in project meetings and travel to project sites throughout Ontario as required. Qualifications Required Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) . Strong understanding of structural engineering principles. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence.
Access to a reliable vehicle for travel to project sites. Preferred Assets Previous consulting engineering experience. Experience in structural restoration, forensic engineering, or insurance-related property damage investigations.
Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD. Familiarity with structural analysis software. Working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code.
Knowledge of Ontario Building Code Part 9 (Housing and Small Buildings) is considered a strong asset. Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) registration, or current enrollment toward obtaining a BCIN, is considered an asset. Experience conducting structural site inspections and preparing engineering reports.

Be committed to continuous professional development and obtaining their P.Eng. designation. Have an interest in expanding their knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, structural restoration, forensic investigations, and obtaining additional professional qualifications such as a BCIN. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in restoration consulting, forensic engineering, structural consulting, insurance-related property damage investigations, or other directly related consulting engineering disciplines.
