Job Description

Note: We're hiring two Engineering Managers for this role. One in Calgary, one in Toronto. Role Summary The Manager, Software Engineering leads multiple developers across delivery pods with accountability for both technical excellence and team health.

This role owns the architectural integrity of solutions across teams, removes engineering blockers, and ensures delivery meets quality and timeline commitments. The Manager is equally responsible for growing a high-performing team and maintaining the trust of clients and internal stakeholders through transparent, reliable execution. What You Will Do: Technical Execution & Oversight Guide teams on architectural decisions, set technical direction, and ensure solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with company standards.

Remove engineering blockers and facilitate cross-functional technical discussions to keep delivery on track. Partner with the delivery team to ensure on-time, on-scope delivery across all active projects. Lead or actively participate in cross-pod technical guilds (e.g., Frontend, AI/ML, DevOps).

Run regular 1:1s with direct reports focused on career growth, performance, and wellbeing. Provide timely, constructive feedback and support individual development plans. Foster an inclusive, psychologically safe team environment where engineers can do their best work.

Responsible AI & Quality Assurance Ensure models and systems are explainable, fair, and auditable throughout the solution lifecycle. Uphold and champion AltaML's Responsible AI (RAI) guidelines and development best practices across all teams. Manage end-to-end solution quality in partnership with pod leads, from design through deployment.

Stakeholder & Client Coordination Communicate team progress, risks, and outcomes clearly to internal stakeholders and external clients. Maintain a strong comms loop with the delivery team to keep project requirements aligned. Support pre-sales and business development by providing low-level solution architecture, demos, and technical Q&A on calls.

Resource Planning & Hiring Conduct hiring interviews and contribute to candidate assessment for engineering roles. Assist with quarterly resource allocation planning across pods. What You Bring 5+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years in a technical lead or management role.

Demonstrated ability to drive architectural decisions and maintain engineering quality in a fast-paced delivery environment. Experience managing and growing engineers across different levels. Comfortable engaging directly with clients and stakeholders—you can translate technical complexity into clear, confident communication.

Familiarity with AI/ML solutions and modern MLOps or software delivery practices. A track record of championing responsible, ethical AI and inclusive team culture. $120,000 - $150,000 a year This role requires a certain level of in-office presence, based out of our Toronto or Calgary office locations. #J-18808-Ljbffr
