Software Developer II – Tech Services Department (2026-27) Starting Date: Immediately Job Description Job ID: 5771396 Position Type: per FTE Salary: $41.41 to $55.48 Per Hour Job Categories: Other Professional > Other Classified Professional Report to: Director Student Systems Department: Technology Services Classification: Classified FLSA: Non-Exempt (Exempt) Work Year/Hrs: 261 days / 7.5 hours Issued: Revised June 27, 2007 Salary Grade: WTCL 55 Basic Function Under direction, serve as a member of a team performing all phases of system life‑cycle development from inception through deployment and support and maintenance for web‑based, client‑server and batch applications. Representative Duties Work under direction at a technical level through all phases of applications systems analysis, design, programming, testing and maintenance. Assist in formulating/defining system scope and objectives, considering hardware and software limitations, development time, and form of desired results.
Collaborate with district members for implementation or development of complex and intradepartmental systems. Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Work with other development staff to design, develop, test and implement web‑based and web‑enabled applications.
Assist with creating proper project documentation of all stages within the development of any application. Perform project management activities such as estimating, scheduling, and monitoring tasks for moderately sized projects from initiation through completion. Assist district staff with questions regarding the functionality of applications.
Promote software from development to test and production. Work with vendors to research and resolve significant issues with existing packaged software and make recommendations for future enhancements. Assist with implementation and/or integration of packaged software systems.
Assist with creation and modification of custom reports to display database data. Perform related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and five years experience or a Master of Science degree and three years experience.
Experience as detailed in the chart under “Distinguishing Characteristics” above. Suitable experience may be substituted for formal education. Licenses and Other Requirements Valid California Driver’s License.
Employment eligibility may include fingerprints, Tuberculosis and/or other employment clearance. Knowledge and Abilities Relational and/or object oriented database technologies (preferably Microsoft SQL Server, ORACLE, Informix) Relational and/or object oriented database design methods Analysis and design using UML (Unified Modeling Language) for User Interface Design and Database Security Server and Web Application Security Supporting solutions for WinNT, Windows 2000, Web (HTML/Browser). Wireless application development Software Development Tools and Methods (Rational Rose, Platinum Erwin, Crystal Reports preferred).
Database Administration on Microsoft SQL Server, ORACLE and Informix. Develop software and work with N‑Tiered architectures Communicate effectively both orally and in writing Implement software configuration management processes Designing, develop and support Microsoft‑based applications Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others Make sound decisions within established guidelines Formulate and express ideas on difficult or complex concepts clearly and effectively in written and oral presentations Plan, organize and complete tasks efficiently and in accordance with District quality standards Working Conditions Environment: Office environment; driving a vehicle to conduct work. Physical Abilities: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; seeing to view monitors; hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; lifting objects up to 60 pounds; sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
