Location & Compensation Location: 141 Laurier Ave W #900, Ottawa, ON, K1P 5J4, Canada Base Pay: $100,000 - $125,000 per year Job Category: Mechanical Engineer, Engineering Responsibilities Main Function Provision of advanced design engineering support services to land projects while following project plans and working to defined standards of quality. Undertake specific design tasks to achieve engineering outputs to program schedule, cost and specification, for both project and bids in accordance with the contract requirements, statements of work and Engineering Department procedures. Duties People Lead and mentor a design team of systems and mechanical engineers, fostering communication among engineering, production, and quality teams for problem investigation and resolution.
Identify and address development needs of team members, coaching them to enhance technical capabilities in alignment with the departmental training plan and overall engineering skills development. Support performance development reviews and technical competency assessments. Manage a small group of mechanical engineers within the engineering function.
Collaborate effectively across the matrix organization to achieve bottom‑line performance, ensuring adherence to budgets and schedules. Process Offer subject matter expertise in bidding and project delivery, including: Developing complex design architecture for new and existing product concepts Providing technical input for bids and modifications Generating and defining requirements and mechanical architecture Ensuring compliance with regulatory and Marshall processes Designing solutions tolerant to operational environments Gain in-depth knowledge of mechanical engineering standards and specifications. Apply best practices in mechanical engineering to support projects and business development.
Innovate to reduce project/product costs and enhance engineering quality, productivity, and delivery timeliness. Maintain rigorous standards and continuous improvement in design solutions, meeting regulatory, quality, and certification requirements. Produce and approve mechanical designs following department processes.
Manage product, build standard, drawing, and document configuration. Lead and participate in design review meetings (SRR, ERR, PDR, CDR, change boards). Provide expertise to other departments, including production.
Utilize Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) for configuration control and engineering change notifications. Create and update Bills of Material (BOM) structures in PLM. Tools Establish and maintain mechanical product breakdown structure (PBS).
Monitor project progress, budgets, and timelines using design tracker, generating regular reports on metrics and KPIs. Create detailed design briefs that outline project objectives, requirements, and constraints. Challenge conventional methods to improve engineering quality, productivity, and delivery timeliness.
Additional Responsibilities Execute other duties as assigned by the Engineering Manager – Mechanical. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering (e.g., Mechanical Engineering) from an accredited university. Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
Hold or be eligible for Professional Engineer (P.Eng) certification. Experience in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Modular Shelter products and/or Aerospace & Defense sectors is preferred. Proven leadership in managing large, complex tasks to meet schedule and budget, demonstrating effective time management across multiple projects.
Ability to provide mentorship and support to junior engineers. Proficiency in compiling technical reports and certification documentation. Knowledge of product safety standards and rugged environments is desirable.
Strong attention to detail with excellent problem‑solving skills. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently while adhering to schedule and budget. Proficiency in computing skills with the aptitude to learn new software packages.
Experience with Autodesk Inventor and Windchill PLM is desirable. Must be able to create and approve drawings to ASME Y14.5 including GD&T and AWS A2.4 weld symbols. Experience working to ISO standards desirable.
Proficient in Microsoft Office software, including Word and Excel. Comprehensive understanding of manufacturing techniques, including sheet metal fabrication, riveting, bonding, and welding, with the ability to mentor a design team in these areas. Effective decision‑making and guidance based on professional or technical expertise.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: fluent written and oral English are mandatory, and competence in French is beneficial. Must be eligible to meet the requirements of export control regulations, including the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and Canadian government security requirements.
