Overview The Role: We are hiring a technically opinionated Staff Engineer to serve as a founding member of the Hybrid Services & Reliability (HSR) team at GM. AV Core Infrastructure (ACI) is the core engineering organization responsible for the unified, secure hybrid platform that enables all autonomous vehicle hosting, validation, and testing. You will be responsible for the measurable reliability of the bench cloud—the end-to-end environment that flows from physical test benches through the secure cloud network into production runtimes.
This role is on the critical path for Super Cruise, where the readiness of our hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems is a Tier-0 requirement for safety validation. Responsibilities Reliability Architecture: Lead the definition and implementation of Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and SLIs for critical hybrid cloud services, establishing ready-state verification processes. Foundational Utilities: Own and automate core on-prem utilities, including DHCP, PXE, and NTP, to enable seamless server auto-provisioning and maintain a healthy fleet of remote CI-based HIL benches.
Observability & MTTR: Develop and maintain dashboards and alerting to identify slot availability and system degradation, driving down Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR) from high-severity incidents. Environment Integrity: Ensure uninterrupted data paths and dependency stability as data moves from ingestion at the test bench into the development and staging runtimes. Technical Mentorship: Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience, identifying opportunities to improve internal processes and services to support functional strategies.
Qualifications Required: Extensive professional experience in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) with a focus on hybrid cloud platforms. Required: Recognized expertise in Linux systems administration and the automation of foundational networking utilities (DHCP/PXE). Required: Deep experience with configuration management tools (e.g., Chef, Ansible) and Infrastructure as Code to reduce operational toil.
Required: Proven ability to work independently on complex issues that require conceptual thinking and the wide application of principles and concepts. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington. The salary range for this role is $184,120 to $275,450. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
