Job Description

Senior WordPress Developer(US Shift) - Custom Coding - Page Builders · Frontend & Backend

Experience: 5+ Years (Custom Coding, with page builder exposure)

Role Type: Full-time On-site

Department: Technology / Web Development

Shift : US Shift

Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior WordPress Developer Working for US Shift who can build and maintain WordPress websites through custom code, and who is equally comfortable working with page builders when a project calls for it. The ideal candidate has strong expertise in PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, a deep understanding of WordPress architecture, and the ability to independently handle custom development, technical SEO fixes, performance optimization, and security hardening.

Custom coding must be the candidate’s core strength. Page builder experience (Elementor, Divi, WPBakery) is expected as a working skill for faster delivery on client projects, but it cannot be the only way the candidate can build. The candidate must be able to write, debug, and maintain custom code independently — including reviewing and fixing code generated with AI tools — and must be able to own a project end to end.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build custom WordPress solutions and write custom code wherever plugins or builders are insufficient
  • Work confidently with page builders (Elementor, Divi, WPBakery) where the project or client stack requires it, including custom CSS/JS on top of builder layouts
  • Develop custom WordPress themes and plugins from scratch using PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Convert Figma/PSD designs into pixel-perfect, responsive WordPress websites
  • Customize and enhance existing themes and plugins as per business requirements
  • Work extensively with WordPress hooks, filters, actions, and template hierarchy
  • Handle backend development including custom REST APIs, MySQL database queries, and third-party integrations
  • Identify and fix Core Web Vitals issues (LCP, INP, CLS), render-blocking scripts, and page speed bottlenecks
  • Troubleshoot and debug complex technical issues using browser DevTools, PHP error logs, and WordPress debug mode
  • Perform WordPress security hardening, malware scanning, and hacked-site recovery
  • Implement technical SEO fixes including schema markup, redirect management, and custom template optimization
  • Use SEO tools such as SEMrush, Ahrefs, Google Search Console, and PageSpeed Insights to pick up site issues and act on them
  • Review and debug AI-generated code confidently before deployment
  • Manage staging/production deployments, hosting environments, and server-level configuration
  • Take full ownership of assigned projects — scoping, execution, timelines, testing, and delivery — with minimal supervision
  • Ensure websites are mobile-friendly, cross-browser compatible, and high-performing
  • Collaborate with designers, SEO teams, and stakeholders to deliver business-focused solutions
  • Guide and mentor junior developers where applicable

Required Skills

  • Strong expertise in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and PHP — must be able to write code from scratch, not just configure plugins
  • Hands-on experience with both custom development and page builders (Elementor, Divi, WPBakery), with custom coding as the primary strength
  • Advanced experience in custom WordPress theme and plugin development
  • Solid understanding of PHP and MySQL — writing custom queries, optimizing them, and handling database-level troubleshooting
  • Deep understanding of WordPress architecture: template hierarchy, hooks, filters, functions.php, child themes, wp-config.php, and WordPress file structure
  • Expertise in custom post types, taxonomies, and advanced custom fields (ACF)
  • Working knowledge of SEO tools such as SEMrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, Google Search Console, and Google Analytics, and the ability to action the issues they report
  • Proficiency in browser DevTools, PHP error logs, and WordPress debug mode for troubleshooting frontend and backend issues
  • Strong knowledge of responsive design, Flexbox, CSS Grid, and modern UI practices
  • Working knowledge of Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), render-blocking resources, lazy loading, image optimization, and caching strategies
  • Experience with WordPress security hardening, malware scanning, hack recovery, and .htaccess/wp-config.php-level fixes
  • Experience with API integrations and backend logic development
  • Comfortable using AI-assisted coding tools with the ability to independently review, debug, and maintain AI-generated code
  • Ability to handle a project independently from start to finish, including client-facing communication where required
  • 3–5+ years of experience specifically in custom WordPress development — page-builder-only experience does not qualify

Preferred Skills (Good to Have)

  • Working knowledge of other CMS platforms such as HubSpot CMS, OpenCMS, Shopify, Joomla, or Drupal
  • Hosting and server knowledge — AWS (EC2, Lightsail, S3, Route 53), Hostinger, cPanel, DNS management, SSL setup, and basic server troubleshooting
  • Experience with WooCommerce customization (custom payment flows, cart logic, product pages)
  • Experience with Git/version control systems
  • Experience with staging/production deployments and environment management
  • Familiarity with technical SEO best practices (schema, structured data, redirect management)
  • Exposure to headless WordPress or modern JavaScript frameworks (optional)

Important Note on Page Builder Experience

Page builder experience is required, but only alongside real custom coding ability. Candidates who have worked primarily or exclusively with Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, or other page builders without hands-on custom coding experience will not be considered. Builders are a delivery tool, not the candidate’s only method of development.

Experience & Qualification

  • 5+ years of custom WordPress development experience (mandatory) — page-builder-only experience does not qualify
  • Demonstrable portfolio of custom-coded WordPress projects (required at interview stage); page-builder projects may be shown as supporting work
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / IT or related field (preferred)

Preferred Candidate Profile

  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills — confident with browser DevTools and WordPress error logs
  • Ability to write clean, scalable, and maintainable code without reliance on page builders
  • Experience handling complex and high-traffic websites independently
  • Ability to independently diagnose and resolve plugin conflicts, theme issues, and performance bottlenecks
  • Ability to run a project on their own — planning, prioritizing, updating stakeholders, and delivering on time without hand-holding
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Shortlisting Note — Practical Assessment

Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a live practical test (approx. 90 minutes) covering: custom CSS/JS debugging using browser DevTools, WordPress functions.php usage, plugin conflict resolution, Core Web Vitals explanation (LCP, INP, CLS), basic schema implementation, hacked-site recovery approach, and a short task on a page builder to confirm working familiarity. Candidates who cannot demonstrate these skills live will not proceed regardless of prior experience claimed.
