Job Description

Technical Manager

Our client is a well-established engineering business, supplying products and solutions across Ireland, the UK, Europe and the Middle East for over 50 years. Employing approximately 40 people at its Newry site, the business combines industry expertise with an ambition to keep innovating in its sector. The company is now seeking an experienced purchasing professional to take ownership of materials purchasing and stock management.

Our client is now seeking a suitably experienced technical individual to own the design and technical detailing of its products and associated structures, and to lead the company's graphics and print department.

The Job:

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Technical Manager will take over the technical design work currently carried out by the business owner, building internal capability and succession while ensuring products are designed and manufactured safely, economically and in compliance with relevant standards.

The successful candidate will:

Take client-supplied layouts from customer bodies, councils and contractors and turn them into manufacturable designs, including dimensions, sheet layout, joints and splits.

Specify back-of-product construction, including channel type, size and spacing, hole positions and bolting arrangements.

Design or specify structural requirements, foundations and adjustments for location and wind loading.

Produce clear sketches, drawings and instructions for production and installation teams.

Manage the day-to-day workload and priorities of the 4-person graphics/print team, overseeing efficient use of new Canon and 3M printing equipment.

Ensure technical decisions are understood and followed by print and fabrication teams, bridging the gap between design and production.

Ensure all designs conform to relevant regulations and specifications, and support ISO and CE audit readiness.

Build a technical library of standard solutions for recurring product and structure types.

Act as technical mentor to the graphics team and key production staff, becoming the go-to internal technical authority as experienced staff move towards retirement.

The Person:

We are seeking a strong technical problem-solver with hands-on design experience in a small-to-medium manufacturing environment.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:

Experience in architectural metalwork, fabricated metal products, structural components, street furniture or a similar sector.

A track record of working out how something is actually built from drawings or client concepts, deciding material sizes, joints, brackets and fixings.

Experience producing workable drawings, sketches and instructions for fabrication, workshop or installation teams.

Experience managing or leading a small team, or clear readiness to step into that responsibility.

A background in street furniture or a related industry, together with familiarity with aluminium and steel fabrication and practical wind-loading considerations, would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be organised and methodical, with strong attention to detail and the ability to balance cost, practicality and compliance when making design decisions comfortable challenging and resetting habits where needed, and capable of motivating a small team.

To Apply:

If you have the technical experience and ambition to take ownership of design and technical leadership for a growing manufacturing business, please send a tailored CV using the appropriate method or call Lucas Executive Search for a confidential discussion about the opportunity.

All applications will be treated in the strictest confidence.
