Job Description

Overview The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire two (2) student assistants, in a learning capacity, under close supervision by a Senior Bridge Engineer. The student assistant will perform engineering-related duties resulting in experience and training in various technical field and office tasks relating to construction of transportation structures. Responsibilities In a learning capacity, assist with inspections for enforcing compliance with plans and specifications; inspect work for quantity, quality, and methodology; record manpower and equipment usage with relevant details; prepare documentation of the work performed.

Assist with drafting, prepare contract pay estimates and other documents and reports involved in construction projects. Assist in reviewing and approving submittals and working drawings; preparation of contract plans, profiles, cross sections, details; determine quantities; perform minor surveys. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable) at an accredited college or university on the affiliation list.

Must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students. Declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting. Must have a valid California driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must meet minimum unit requirements for undergraduate and graduate student classifications; proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Knowledge of algebra and geometry, including their application to engineering.

Knowledge of drafting procedures and equipment. Proficiency in English at a level equivalent to that learned in a 12th grade curriculum. Ability to understand general engineering concepts and to perform accurate mathematical calculations.

Ability to learn bridge-building and construction vocabulary, sequences, and methods; and basic computer applications used in transportation engineering work. Ability to learn methods of designing, proportioning and sampling Portland Cement Concrete. Ability to learn to evaluate work methods and traffic conditions to ensure safety.

Must possess a valid California driver's license and meet with various people of differing backgrounds. Willingness to perform routine or detailed work to learn practical techniques. Job assignments may be subject to rotation, changes of shift, field work and travel.

Preferred Qualifications Preference may be given to qualified applicants up to age 26 who are dependents in foster care, homeless youth, formerly incarcerated youth, or victims of human trafficking, per Government Code Section 18220. Compensation Base pay: $18.28 – $28.16 per hour. Part-time, non-benefited student position.

Work Schedule Flexible workdays and hours, Monday–Friday, between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Final schedule determined by the supervisor. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office or field environment.

May require outdoor work in various weather conditions, with potential for bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing as part of field duties. #J-18808-Ljbffr
