Staff Scientist - Protein Engineering (San Diego)

Position Overview Seeking Staff Scientists with deep expertise in protein engineering to lead the design and optimization of proteins enabling next-generation sequencing and molecular detection platforms.

This role will focus on advancing protein design strategies, including enzyme engineering and directed evolution, to improve performance, specificity, and scalability of core technologies. Key Responsibilities Lead protein engineering efforts, including design, optimization, and characterization of enzymes and proteins Develop and execute directed evolution and/or rational design strategies Design and interpret screening and selection assays for engineered proteins Collaborate cross-functionally with chemistry, assay development, and computational teams Analyze experimental data to guide iterative protein optimization Contribute to platform development through innovation in protein function and performance Mentor junior scientists and provide technical leadership within project teams Qualifications PhD in Protein Engineering, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, or related field ~8–12+ years of industry experience Strong track record in protein engineering, enzyme engineering, or directed evolution Experience designing and executing screening strategies for protein variants Demonstrated ability to lead projects and contribute to scientific strategy Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
