Job Purpose
The Senior Technical Engineer / Technical Lead will act as ASG Tech's senior technical authority, working closely with the Managing Director to design, deliver and maintain high-quality electronic security solutions.
This is a hands-on senior engineering role, combining customer engagement, technical design, pre-sales support, installation, commissioning, fault finding, compliance and quality assurance. The postholder will personally undertake technical surveys, system design and engineering activities while providing technical leadership to internal and third-party engineering resources.
The role will support customer engagements, translating security risks and operational requirements into technically appropriate and commercially viable solutions, and ensuring all systems are delivered in accordance with relevant Standards, Codes of Practice and certification requirements.
The postholder will also manage the technical delivery of third-party installation partners and subcontractors, ensuring work undertaken on behalf of ASG Tech meets the Company's technical, quality, compliance and customer service standards.
As ASG Tech grows, the role will develop into the senior technical authority for the engineering function.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design & Pre-Sales
Work alongside the Managing Director during customer engagements, providing technical expertise and developing solutions based on customer risks, operational requirements and site conditions.
Undertake technical site surveys and translate requirements into system designs, specifications, schematics, cable and device schedules.
Produce Bills of Materials (BOMs), labour estimates and technical inputs to support accurate quotations and proposals.
Review and approve system designs, risk assessments, system grading and category selection prior to installation.
Support customer presentations, demonstrations and technical discussions.
Ensure proposed solutions are technically sound, commercially deliverable and appropriately costed.
Installation, Commissioning & Technical Support
Personally undertake installation, configuration, commissioning and fault finding where required, particularly on complex, high-value or non-standard projects.
Act as the senior technical point of reference and escalation for Installation and Service Engineers.
Provide technical leadership and on-site support throughout installation, commissioning and customer handover.
Configure and commission networked and IP-based security systems, including integration between different platforms and technologies.
Investigate complex or recurring faults, identifying root causes and implementing corrective measures.
Third-Party Installer Management
Manage and coordinate third-party installers and subcontractors delivering ASG Tech projects.
Ensure third-party resources understand the system design, scope of works, programme and required installation standards.
Provide technical direction and monitor installation quality, progress and compliance throughout project delivery.
Carry out technical inspection and final sign-off of third-party installations before customer handover.
Support the selection, technical assessment and approval of installation partners and monitor their ongoing performance and competence.
Compliance, Quality & Technical Governance
Ensure systems are designed, installed, commissioned and documented in accordance with applicable British and European Standards, Codes of Practice and certification requirements.
Maintain working knowledge of relevant standards including BS EN 50131 / PD 6662, BS EN 50136, BS EN 62676, BS EN (phone number removed)-1, BS 8418 and BS 7671.
Ensure designs, specifications and completion documentation satisfy ASG Tech's certification requirements and remain audit-ready.
Support ASG Tech's NSI certification and ongoing compliance requirements.
Carry out quality inspections and final technical sign-off of completed installations.
Maintain awareness of changes to relevant Standards, Codes of Practice, insurer requirements and NPCC policies.
Ensure engineering activities comply with Company health and safety requirements.
Products, Manufacturers & Engineering Capability
Support the Managing Director in evaluating and selecting technology partners, manufacturers and distributors.
Evaluate new products and technologies for functionality, reliability, interoperability and suitability for ASG Tech customers.
Maintain strong technical relationships with manufacturers, distributors and technical support teams.
Develop integrated solutions incorporating CCTV, access control, intruder detection, intercom, monitoring and other security technologies.
Support the integration of electronic security technology with monitoring and wider Assist Group security services.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, standard designs and installation guidance.
Provide technical leadership, mentoring and coaching to engineers and third-party resources.
Identify technical training and manufacturer certification requirements.
Support the Managing Director in developing ASG Tech's overall engineering capability.
Skills & Experience
Essential
Time-served electronic security systems engineer with significant hands-on field experience.
Strong practical experience across CCTV, intruder alarm and access control systems.
Proven experience designing, installing, configuring, commissioning and fault-finding complex electronic security systems.
Strong experience with networked and IP-based systems and integration between security platforms.
Working knowledge of IP networking, including addressing, VLANs, bandwidth and storage calculations.
Strong knowledge of relevant British and European electronic security Standards and Codes of Practice.
Experience working within an NSI or SSAIB certificated environment and understanding audit requirements.
Ability to undertake technical surveys and translate customer requirements and risks into practical system designs.
Ability to produce and interpret technical drawings, specifications, equipment schedules and Bills of Materials.
Experience managing or technically supervising subcontractors, third-party installers or engineering resources.
Strong fault-finding and problem-solving capability.
Confident customer-facing communicator, able to explain technical matters to technical and non-technical audiences.
Comfortable working within a growing business requiring both technical leadership and hands-on engineering delivery.
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required.
Eligible to be screened to BS 7858.
Desirable
Experience with fire detection and alarm systems and knowledge of BS 5839-1.
Relevant technical qualifications, such as FIA units, City & Guilds 2391/2382, ECS or equivalent.
Experience across retail, commercial, corporate, multi-site or high-value residential environments.
Experience of remote monitoring, ARC connectivity and alarm transmission technologies.
Manufacturer certifications across recognised CCTV, intruder and access control platforms.
Experience integrating electronic security technology with monitoring and physical security operations.
Experience mentoring or developing other engineers.
Role Development
ASG Tech is developing its technical security capability and this role will play a key part in shaping that development.
Initially, the position will have a strong hands-on focus, working directly with the Managing Director across customer engagement, technical surveys, solution design, quotation, installation, third-party installer management and commissioning.
As the business grows, the role is expected to evolve towards broader technical leadership, with increasing responsibility for the engineering team, technical governance, product strategy, quality assurance and engineering standards.
