Senior Staff Engineer, Software Engineering Position Description We are seeking a highly accomplished Senior Staff Engineer to join our engineering organization and drive technical excellence across our platform. This pivotal role combines deep handsâon expertise with the ability to influence technical direction at an organizational level. As a Senior Staff Engineer you will architect scalable infrastructure, mentor engineering teams, and apply cuttingâedge AI solutions to businessâcritical problems.
Position Responsibilities Define and drive the technical vision for infrastructure and AIâpowered systems across the organization Design, architect, and implement highly scalable, faultâtolerant distributed systems Lead technical decisionâmaking on critical projects, balancing shortâterm needs with longâterm sustainability Establish and champion engineering best practices, design patterns, and coding standards Architect and optimise compute infrastructure for performance, reliability, and cost efficiency Design and implement database solutions (relational and NoSQL) that scale to meet business demands Drive cloud infrastructure strategy, including containerisation, orchestration, and serverless architectures Ensure system reliability, observability, and operational excellence across all platform components Identify and prioritise opportunities to apply AI/ML to solve highâimpact business problems Stay current with emerging AI technologies and evaluate their applicability to business challenges Mentor and grow senior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning Conduct design reviews and provide constructive feedback on technical proposals Collaborate crossâfunctionally with product, design, and business stakeholders Lead complex, ambiguous projects from conception through delivery Drive pragmatic tradeâoffs between technical debt, velocity, and quality Contribute handsâon to critical codebases when needed Champion operational excellence and incident management best practices Qualifications Deep expertise in infrastructure systems, including compute platforms (Kubernetes, Docker, cloud services), networking, and storage Strong database experience across relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL solutions (MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, DynamoDB) Demonstrated experience applying AI to solve realâworld problems in production environments Expertâlevel proficiency in at least two programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, Go, Rust) Experience designing and building distributed systems at scale Strong understanding of cloud platforms (Azure OR AWS) and infrastructureâasâcode practices Handsâon experience with CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and deployment automation (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, ArgoCD) Background in building realâtime data processing systems (Kafka, Flink, Spark) Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences Experience working in a platform engineering team, building internal developer platforms or shared infrastructure services Experience 10+ years of professional software development experience, with a proven track record of increasing technical scope and impact 6+ years of experience in openâsource frameworks 5+ years of development in a largeâscale, missionâcritical environment Handsâon work experience coaching and mentoring personnel in a technical environment 5+ years of experience with one of the public clouds â AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service 5+ years of experience working in a platform engineering team, building internal developer platforms or shared infrastructure services Education Bachelorâs degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience Annual Salary $130,000.00 â $260,000.00 At this time, GEICO will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.
