Reporting to the Mechanical Section Manager, the Senior Mechanical Engineer is a member of the integrated project team.
The project mix spans a variety of typologies and systems—including hyperscale data centers and collaborations with other business groups within HDR (Water, Resources, Transportation). The role involves multiple projects at different locations, and may include construction contract administration, site reviews, and condition assessments. Responsibilities Coordinate the work of Mechanical Engineers with the balance of a multi‑discipline team throughout the entire project’s development Establish client relations, and participate in the marketing, design, and production meetings regarding mechanical systems Assume the mechanical lead on many projects Participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance Conduct schematic, design development, and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with the Project Manager, Project Architect, and other disciplines Coordinate workload through the entire project development to complete documents on schedule Track the financial aspects of projects, and coordinate and adjust the work efforts with the team to ensure completion within the agreed schedule Work with the Project Manager, Regional Controller, and Regional Director for project reviews with corporate management as needed Review mechanical documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines Write and edit mechanical specifications; select equipment, mechanical systems, and devices Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, and change orders, and incorporate agreed‑upon changes into the project documents Produce and coordinate several projects concurrently Provide construction contract administration as needed Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Mechanical Project Engineers, Mechanical Project Coordinators, or Mechanical CAD Technicians as needed Perform other duties as required Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering with a mechanical emphasis Experience in data centre, semiconductor, healthcare, laboratory, or sports facilities Experience and/or interest in sustainable design desired Experience using AI productivity tools to accelerate project workstreams, including technical writing, code and specification research, and performance simulation and modelling Computer experience using IESVE or similar software, manufacturer selection software, AI‑enhanced engineering Strong communication and listening skills Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments Good organizational skills, confident curiosity, strong analytical judgment Ability to rigorously audit, validate, and verify all AI‑generated outputs (examples: calculations, code interpretations, and routing designs) against core mechanical engineering fundamentals and regulations Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering A minimum of 10 years in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildings Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (Example: Professional Engineer (PE) license) Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, MS Project, and AutoCAD Demonstrated leadership skills, previous team coordination and project management experience Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee‑owned culture is a must What We Believe HDR is our company.
