Senior Financial Accountant – Lisbon (6-Month Fixed-Term Contract - Possible extension)

Overview

We are looking for an experienced and detail-focused Senior Financial Accountant to join our clients finance function on a 6-month fixed-term basis in Lisbon.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, this position offers the opportunity to play a key role in financial reporting, taxation, compliance, process optimisation, and finance transformation activities within a dynamic international organisation. The successful candidate will work closely with both local and global stakeholders to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of financial operations.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Accounting

• Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close activities, ensuring reporting deadlines are achieved.
• Prepare, review, and post journal entries within ERP systems.
• Perform balance sheet reconciliations and investigate variances where required.
• Maintain accurate accounting records and ensure compliance with internal accounting policies.
• Assist in the preparation of statutory financial statements and supporting schedules.

Tax & Regulatory Compliance

• Prepare and submit indirect and direct tax returns in accordance with Portuguese legislation.
• Ensure compliance with all local reporting obligations and regulatory requirements.
• Produce and validate electronic accounting and tax files required by local authorities.
• Support external audits and provide requested documentation and explanations.

Billing & Transaction Processing

• Oversee the preparation and issuance of customer invoices.
• Support accounts payable activities and collaborate with shared service teams to resolve queries.
• Monitor financial transactions to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Reporting & Analysis

• Prepare recurring financial reports for regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders.
• Deliver financial analysis and management information to support business decision-making.
• Respond to finance-related queries from operational and corporate teams.

Continuous Improvement

• Contribute to finance transformation and process improvement initiatives.
• Support the implementation of automation and digital finance solutions.
• Assist with ERP system enhancements and integration projects.
• Identify opportunities to improve reporting efficiency, control effectiveness, and data quality.

Skills & Experience

Essential Requirements

• Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
• Proven experience in a senior accounting or financial reporting role.
• Strong knowledge of Portuguese accounting standards and international financial reporting principles.
• Good understanding of Portuguese taxation, including VAT and corporate tax requirements.
• Experience using ERP systems within a corporate environment.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Professional level English, both written and spoken.
