Senior Electrical Engineer — MEP Consulting (Power, Lighting, Backup Systems)
Upstart AEC
Job Description
Remote | Full-Time | 40-50k USD/year
UpstartAEC is hiring a Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the technical design and execution of electrical engineering projects from initiation through construction completion, with minimal oversight. This is a full-time, exempt role based out of our Oregon and California offices, with hybrid flexibility available per company policy.
You will own the design of basic to highly complex electrical systems, including normal, emergency, and backup power distribution, lighting and lighting controls, and integration with alternative energy systems. This role is ideal for a seasoned MEP consulting engineer ready to serve as engineer of record on assigned projects, mentor through quality-control leadership, and deliver work that meets code, utility, and AHJ requirements.
What You'll Do
- Design low- and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems, including feeders, grounding and bonding, and end-use power connections.
- Perform electrical calculations: demand and connected load, voltage drop, short-circuit, and energy code compliance.
- Size and specify backup power systems (generator, UPS, ATS) and lay out associated equipment rooms.
- Calculate lighting photometrics using industry-standard software; design lighting and lighting control systems with full sequence-of-operations documentation.
- Integrate interconnection requirements for photovoltaic, battery storage, and cogeneration systems.
- Produce and edit drawings in AutoCAD (2D) and Revit (3D, preferred).
- Write and edit project specifications, control sequences, diagrams, and point lists.
- Conduct independent QC checks on electrical designs and adhere to ColeBreit standards.
- Perform field investigations and analyze existing/new project loads to inform design decisions.
- Manage assigned work within established project budgets and flag scope creep early.
- Serve as engineer of record when assigned and properly authorized.
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of MEP consulting experience with demonstrated advanced technical design and project execution.
- Deep knowledge of low- and medium-voltage electrical systems and special systems such as fire alarm and nurse call.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit strongly preferred.
- Strong grasp of applicable codes and standards (NEC, energy codes, AHJ, utility requirements).
- Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw sound engineering conclusions independently.
- Excellent organization, time management, and written/verbal communication skills.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with minimal supervision.
Nice to Have
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Oregon or California or any experience with US-based projects.
- Experience serving as engineer of record.
- Experience with healthcare, mission-critical, or industrial project types.
