Job Description

Senior Accountant Hanlon Industries Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia

Senior Accountant (Team Lead)

Join a growing Australian business where your career can grow with it

Hanlon is a proudly independent, family-owned business delivering large-scale steel manufacturing and construction solutions across Australasia.

With continued growth across Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand, we’re looking for an experienced Senior Accountant ready to take the next step into finance leadership.

Reporting directly to the Head of Finance, you’ll lead a small team, partner closely with senior leaders and play a key role in strengthening our finance operations, reporting, controls and commercial insight across a multi-entity business.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to broaden their leadership experience while gaining exposure to executive reporting, business improvement initiatives and strategic decision-making.

About the Role

You’ll be a key leader within our finance team, overseeing two experienced team members - Bookkeeper and Payroll Officer - while ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong financial controls and continuous improvement across the finance function.

This isn’t a role where you’ll spend your days processing transactions. You’ll review work, solve problems, coach your team, improve systems and partner closely with the Head of Finance to help shape the future of the finance function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach and develop two direct reports, providing day-to-day guidance, support and performance feedback.

  • Own the month-end process, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting across the business.

  • Review balance sheet reconciliations and maintain the integrity of the general ledger and financial controls.

  • Coordinate monthly and consolidated reporting across multiple entities, including our New Zealand trading entity.

  • Support budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis to assist business decision-making.

  • Prepare executive and Board reporting packs.

  • Drive improvements across finance systems, reporting processes and internal controls.

  • Support BAS, payroll tax, WorkCover, audit, tax and statutory reporting requirements.

  • Use AI-enabled tools, including Claude AI, to support smarter reporting, analysis and automation.

About You

You are a commercially minded accountant who enjoys understanding how a business operates, not just producing the numbers.

You have built strong technical accounting capability and are now looking to take the next step by leading a small team, partnering with senior leaders and helping improve the way finance supports the business.

We’re embracing AI within our finance function and are looking for someone who is curious, open-minded and interested in using technology to improve reporting, analysis and decision-making. You don’t need to be an AI expert, just willing to learn and explore new ways of working.

You’ll Bring

  • CPA or CA qualification (or nearing completion).

  • 5–8 years’ experience in a Senior Accountant or similar role.

  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, balance sheet management and month-end processes.

  • Proven experience reviewing and maintaining balance sheet reconciliations and ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting.

  • Experience reviewing the work of others and providing day-to-day leadership or mentoring.

  • Exposure to budgeting, forecasting and management reporting.

  • Confidence working across multiple entities or business divisions.

  • Strong Excel, systems and analytical capability.

  • Experience within a construction, manufacturing or another project-based business will be highly regarded.

  • A proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and accountability.

Why Join Hanlon?

At Hanlon, we back people who take initiative and want to grow.

You’ll join a business where finance plays a genuine operational and strategic role—not just a back-office function. We value fresh thinking, accountability and people who want to make an impact.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to lead and develop a small finance team.

  • Clear career progression and professional development opportunities.

  • Exposure to executive and Board-level reporting.

  • The opportunity to influence systems, processes and business performance.

  • A fast-paced, collaborative environment where your contribution genuinely matters.

  • A supportive culture built on trust, accountability and continuous improvement.

If you’re an experienced Senior Accountant looking for your next career step and the opportunity to lead, influence and grow within a successful Australian business, we’d love to hear from you.
