What We’re Looking For Advanced RF Engineer for RFID Reader Product design.

The Advanced Location Technology (ALT) RF Development Team is responsible for the design of next‑generation RFID and location products for the Industrial, Healthcare, and Sports Markets. Products incorporate a diverse set of location technologies including UHF RFID, Ultra‑Wideband (UWB), Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), WWAN and Wi‑Fi to locate assets and people. Members of the hardware team design the RFID readers, antennas, UWB tags, beacons, receivers, hubs, and other key hardware components in the overall location solutions.

Products developed by this group include Zebra’s handheld and fixed RFID readers in addition to UWB tags and receivers used to track all NFL football players and balls at all NFL games throughout stadiums. The Advanced RF Design Engineer will be responsible for developing products from inception to production release. Designs may consist of RF systems and board‑level designs of radio transmitters and receivers in the 800 MHz‑8 GHz range, RF front‑ends, and RF sub‑systems and antennas.

Other responsibilities include support for manufacturing, design and/or specification of antennas, and documentation including specifications, user manuals, and test procedures. The candidate will work with other in‑house RF, antenna, electrical, mechanical, and firmware engineers as well as off‑shore joint‑development partners (JDMs) in the design and manufacture of these advanced location technology products. This role is a hybrid position and requires a minimum of three days per week in our Holtsville, NY office.

Responsibilities Establish requirements for highly complex RF design projects and may lead a team responsible for establishing requirements. Responsible for RF receiver and transmitter design, analysis, and product integration. Architect and design highly complex RF design projects, completing all phases of the projects and following through on all in‑process and final inspection activities.

Implement RF systems throughout a product design cycle. Design power supplies and other supporting circuits. Select parts, prototype, bring up factory and debug in the lab, and conduct root‑cause analysis.

Work with internal cross‑functional teams and external JDM/CMs to successfully bring RFID products to market. Support EMI/EMC troubleshooting and validation. Architect, design, and support development and testing of RF design solutions for several highly complex technical projects.

Create specifications and provide input for product requirements. Contribute to the technology roadmap process. Prioritize quality and seek improvements in all aspects of RF projects.

Travel domestically or internationally to achieve program milestones as required. Serve as a knowledge leader in RF design and functional knowledge across multiple engineering disciplines and program management to provide technical leadership to a given program. Define requirements for and design complex new tools to aid in the analysis and solving of complex problems.

Initiate cross‑company collaboration and develop positive relationships with other engineering disciplines. Exercise judgment (within broadly defined policies and practices) in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Coordinate the activities of other personnel as needed.

Network with key contacts outside own area of expertise, interact with management and senior customer personnel on matters requiring coordination across organizational lines, represent the organization as the principal customer contact, and often perform project leadership. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years experience or Master’s degree and 4+ years experience. Experienced board‑level RF circuit designer.

Capable of RF circuit tuning and troubleshooting. Experience with antenna design and measurements. Familiarity with VNA’s, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and RF power meters.

Preferred Qualifications RF design experience in the 800 MHz to 8 GHz range. RF design experience for UHF RFID readers – a big plus. Experience with RF power amplifier design and measurements.

Familiarity with RF receiver design and measurements. RF system‑level design experience (RFID, UWB). Experience with ADS, CST, Cadence design tools.

Pay Range $122,800.00 – $184,200.00 Annual Incentive Compensation In addition to base pay, Zebra offers this role the opportunity to earn a performance‑based annual cash incentive, at a target equal to 12% of base pay, in accordance with the terms of the applicable incentive plan.
