Senior Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Engineer – Temporary Position

Contract Duration: Initial 6-month assignment, with the possibility of month-by-month extensions

We are seeking an experienced Senior Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Engineer to join our team on a temporary basis. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge quantum communications and space infrastructure programmes while ensuring continuity across a portfolio of strategic European projects.

The successful candidate will be embedded within our New Programs and Space Infrastructures Department in Madrid, working alongside multidisciplinary teams on innovative quantum and optical communications initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the development and execution of advanced Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and secure communications projects.
• Contribute to the design, implementation, and coordination of European and ESA-funded programmes.
• Prepare technical proposals and bids for European and institutional customers.
• Coordinate and collaborate with international partners, customers, and multidisciplinary consortia.
• Engage with institutional stakeholders, including the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Commission, and other strategic partners.
• Provide technical leadership in the definition of next-generation quantum communication and space infrastructure solutions.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree or PhD in Physics, Telecommunications Engineering, Photonics, or a related discipline.
• 3–5 years of professional experience in quantum communications, with a strong focus on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).
• Experience working within the space sector.
• Proven involvement in ESA and European-funded programmes, such as Horizon Europe, EuroQCI, or the Quantum Flagship.
• Experience in proposal writing, bid preparation, and the coordination of international consortia.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to engage effectively with customers, partners, and institutional stakeholders.
• Spanish language skills are highly desirable.

What You'll Work On

You will have the opportunity to contribute to a diverse portfolio of highly innovative and technically challenging projects, including:

• GEO-QKD – Integration of a Quantum Key Distribution payload into a GEO satellite platform, including preparation for launch and in-orbit operations.
• Q-Design – Development of an orchestration framework integrating LEO, GEO, and terrestrial quantum communication networks.
• LEO-QKD – A European Commission initiative focused on satellite-based QKD services in Low Earth Orbit, currently in the proposal phase.
• EuroQCI Projects – Multiple initiatives covering infrastructure evolution, interoperability, bridging activities, QKD standardisation, and next-generation secure communication architectures.
• Emerging Space Technologies – Innovative projects in optical communications and future space infrastructures aimed at enabling new products, services, and commercial opportunities.

Contract Information

This is a temporary position commencing in September 2026. The initial assignment is expected to last approximately six months, with the possibility of subsequent month-by-month extensions.

The role has been created to ensure continuity of ongoing activities while the recruitment process for a permanent position is completed.
