Job Summary:

The Department of Emergency Medicine is recruiting doctoral-levelscientists across the clinical and translational research spectrumincluding basic/foundational, clinical, health services, and publichealth research. This person will serve as a key part of theresearch team in a School of Medicine clinical and translational research program. The researcher in this position will be appointedto, and build a career at, the Department of Emergency Medicine atthe University of Colorado School of Medicine at the AnschutzMedical Campus in Aurora, Colorado.

Environment:

The Emergency Department at the University of Colorado Hospital isa 55,000 square foot state of the art facility with 76 treatmentareas including a 16-bed observation unit and is a major teachingsite for the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine. TheUniversityofColoradoHospital is a 600+ bed quaternary carereferral center, level I trauma center, ABA verified burn center,joint commission certified comprehensive stroke center ofexcellence and is the academic flagship of the University ofColorado Health System. Current ED patient volumes are in excess of100,000 visits per year with anticipated growth of 1-2% annually.The University of Colorado School of Medicine is located on theAnschutz Medical Campus, the largest academic medical center in theRocky Mountain Region, including six professional schools, togetherserving 4,500 degree-seeking students and approximately 6,400faculty members.

Clinical staff provide more than 2 millionindividual patient visits annually. In FY2020, faculty generatedmore than $600 million in extramural funding from federal, state,and foundation sources.

Job Responsibilities include:

Scholarship Mission:

  • Demonstrate academic productivity by publishing no fewer than twohigh impact products of scholarship per year, defined aspeer-reviewed manuscripts, treatise, chapters, tests or significantcurricular offerings. This person will hold a leadership in atleast half of these products of scholarship, for example, as theequivalent of first or senior author on at least one. The School ofMedicine supports Boyer's broad definition of scholarship toinclude scholarship of discovery, application, integration, andeducation. Documented achievement in products of scholarship thatmeet these standards (and are the rubric for promotion) areexpected annually.
  • Collaborate with emergency medicine faculty in obtainingextramural funding, manuscript preparation and publication, andother dissemination activities such as conferencepresentations.
  • Work to create and add to knowledge in a field of study, toinclude advancing new theories/principles/hypotheses, expandingupon/interpreting existing ideas, and improving the application ofthese in new settings.

Research Mission:

  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, or co-investigatoron research projects and experiments to advance knowledge in theirfield.
  • Perform scientific grant and contract preparation,research-specific budgeting submission, periodic scientific andprogrammatic reports, and ensure rapidly closing deadlines aremet.
  • Meet all regulatory and compliance guidance with integrity andengage with sponsors and colleagues in an ethical and professionalmanner.
  • Conduct needs assessment, planning, implementation, evaluationand sustainment of change to meet objectives, and workcollaboratively to achieve goals.
  • If pertinent, perform scientific research in a laboratory settingas relevant to area of expertise on an occasional basis, to includedemonstration of new techniques, data validation, experimentaldesign, and courses of instruction.
  • Develop a professional development plan with support fromDepartment leaders that include education on innovations in theirfield.

Educational Mission (Teaching and Mentoring):

  • Contribute to the educational mission of the University andSchool with didactic or experiential teaching for learners of manylevels spanning pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, or faculty.
  • Mentor learners on research projects relevant to the person'sareas of expertise.
  • Continue professional development and growth according topersonal needs and certification requirements, includingparticipation in faculty development

Service Mission/Administrative Activities:

  • Committee membership as needed by the Department on an ad hocbasis.
  • Committee responsibilities within the School of Medicine orAnschutz Medical Campus
  • Participate and lead as pertinent:
  • Departmental faculty meetings regularly scheduled
  • Monthly Scientist Training and Intensive Mentoring (STIM) Work inProgress sessions
  • Departmental research meetings
  • Other project or team meetings as applicable

Work Location:

Hybrid โ€“ this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days perweek on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

  • Established an independent research program that will becompetitive for extramural funding.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of success with extramural funding.

Associate Professor:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD in a relevant field and/or an MD degree.
  • Successfully secured extramural funding.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A robust, well developed, and extramurally funded researchprogram.
  • A national reputation for excellent and impactful work in theirdiscipline.

Professor:
