Job Summary Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Sunnyvale is seeking an Inpatient Services Nursing Director who is responsible for the care of patients and provides leadership in the inpatient settings: Med-Surg/Telemetry, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) & Cardiac Specialty Unit (CSU). The Director is accountable for the clinical, operational, and fiscal performance of the designated unit. The position oversees the execution of shortā and longāterm strategies to support organizational goals pertinent to the Baylor Scott & WhiteāSunnyvale campus, establishes and ensures compliance with standards of clinical care, and maintains accountability for staffing, quality, safety, service, and clinical excellence in these areas.
Other responsibilities include assisting Clinical Managers/supervisors with EvidenceāBased Leadership, supporting nursing professional practice, responding to patient or physician complaints in an administrative leadership role, consulting with staff, physicians and the CNO on nursing problems, and interpreting hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met. The Director maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities, and assists in formulating the department budget. Qualifications Typically provides leadership to managers and/or frontline professional staff.
Develops longāterm plans and strategies for the area of defined responsibility aligned with established functional strategies, and works with subordinate managers to operationalize and execute the strategy. Meets staffing productivity goals for each department on a predetermined basis (HPPD). Communicates priorities and expectations, monitors progress, and provides direction and course corrections.
Establishes budgets and holds self and subordinate managers accountable for managing to achieve expected outcomes. Makes decisions guided by resource availability and functional objectives. Has knowledge of hemodynamic status interpretation and ensures staff competence in nursing processes and unit equipment.
Optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthācare errors by promoting use of evidenceābased practice (EBP) and meeting all regulatory requirements. Completes annual and probationary evaluations and returns documentation to Human Resources timely. Demonstrates clinical proficiency in area of expertise by maintaining national certification and presenting at local, national, and international conferences.
Coordinates patient care to meet patient needs and hospital policy, and consults with other departments for collaboration in patient care and performance improvement activities. Interacts professionally with patients/families, involving them in the plan of care and maintaining good working relationships within the department and with other departments. Works collaboratively with the CNO, ancillary directors, managers, and staff to improve Press Ganey and HCAHPS scores, achieving the highest level of patient satisfaction and outcomes.
Maintains performance improvement activities for the department. Assumes responsibility for patient and patient family needs, ensuring safety, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes, and using appropriate interpersonal techniques to resolve difficult situations. Supports and empowers staff to embrace the mission and value statement of the organization, encouraging evidenceābased research and practice.
Creates, reviews, and revises policies and procedures. Develops and directs orientation programs, ināservices, and continuing education for all organizational personnel. Ensures personnel receive timely, complete, and documented orientation and training, and acts as an expert in diagnosing educational problems and developing work plans.
Coordinates required ināservices annually, including safety, fire/emergency preparedness, infection control, and basic cardiac life support. Performs management activities per role delineation and in the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer. Assists the Chief Nursing Officer in developing a professional nursing staff.
Demonstrates a poised, credible, and confident demeanor that reassures others and commands respect, conveying an image consistent with the organizationās vision and values. Graduate from an accredited school of nursing: bachelorās degree required, masterās preferred. Current Texas Registered Nurse Licensure (Texas must be the home state of license).
Three or more years of previous management experience in all aspects of nursing leadership. AHA BLS and ACLS required; national certification in area of expertise preferred. CPI certification within first six months in role.
Effective communication in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred. Strong written and verbal skills.
