Mechanical Engineer / Test Engineer – Hands-On Mechanical, Electrical & Bespoke Testing

About MechTest

MechTest is a Brisbane-based testing and investigation laboratory located in Archerfield. We provide mechanical testing, metallurgical testing, chemical analysis, non-destructive testing, and failure investigation services across a range of industries.

We are looking for a practical and technically minded Mechanical Engineer / Test Engineer who is comfortable working across office, laboratory, workshop, and site-based environments.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on testing work, practical problem-solving, and working with a range of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and data capture systems.

About the role

This is not a purely desk-based role.

The successful applicant will be involved in both practical testing work and office-based engineering tasks. You will assist with standard and bespoke mechanical/load testing jobs, sample preparation, test setup, fixture development, data collection, technical reporting, and documentation.

The role may also involve attending client sites to assist with testing, inspections, investigations, equipment setup, measurements, and data collection.

A strong interest in electrical systems, electronics, instrumentation, data capture, and programming would be highly regarded.

This role would suit someone who enjoys solving real-world engineering problems, building practical test setups, working hands on with equipment, and documenting results clearly and professionally.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform standard and bespoke mechanical/load testing
  • Assist with laboratory, workshop, and site-based testing work
  • Attend client sites when required for testing, inspection, investigation, setup, or data collection
  • Assist with the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of testing equipment
  • Prepare samples using cutting, machining, grinding, CNC, power tools, and hand tools
  • Design, build, or modify support test fixtures, jigs, and testing equipment
  • Assist with electrical, electronic, instrumentation, and data capture systems
  • Record, review, and interpret test data
  • Prepare technical reports, procedures, test methods, and documentation
  • Work across office, laboratory, workshop, and site environments
  • Communicate clearly with engineers, technicians, laboratory staff, clients, and site personnel when required
  • Maintain safe, accurate, and organised work practices

About you

You are practical, curious, and comfortable working with both tools and technical documentation. You enjoy understanding how things work, setting up tests, solving problems, and producing clear written reports.

You will ideally have:

  • A Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering qualification or similar technical background
  • Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude
  • Willingness to perform office, laboratory, workshop, and site-based work
  • Workshop and fabrication experience
  • Experience with software and electronics
  • Good technical writing skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • A reliable, safety-focused, and professional approach
  • Ability to work on varied jobs where each project may be different
  • Varied and practical engineering work
  • Combination of office, laboratory, workshop, and site-based work
  • Opportunity to work on standard and custom testing projects
  • Supportive technical environment with experienced staff
  • Archerfield location in Brisbane’s southside
