The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) in Rosemont, IL is the premier global organization representing the interests of orthopaedic surgeons and other professionals who provide comprehensive health services for the care of active people of all ages. Position Summary

The Society has an immediate opening for a Director of Marketing and Membership to become a member of a dynamic professional team comprising leaders in non-profit management that support and connect orthopaedic surgeons and other professionals through education and research to prevent and resolve sports injuries among active people of all ages and levels. The Director of Marketing & Membership is a senior leadership position responsible for developing and executing AOSSM's integrated marketing, brand, communications, and membership growth strategy. This role serves as a strategic business partner to the CEO and senior leadership, ensuring marketing initiatives support the Society's strategic plan, enhance member engagement, strengthen the AOSSM brand, increase participation in educational offerings, support philanthropy and sponsorship initiatives, and contribute to long-term organizational growth.

The Director leads a high-performing marketing and membership team, establishes clear priorities and accountability, and uses data, technology, and innovation to improve organizational performance.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership (25%)

  • Develop and execute an integrated annual marketing and membership strategy aligned with AOSSM's Strategic Plan.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and leadership team.
  • Lead annual marketing planning, budgeting, prioritization, and resource allocation.
  • Partner with department leaders to support major organizational initiatives.

Brand & Communications (20%)

  • Serve as steward of the AOSSM brand across all communication channels.
  • Lead organizational messaging, storytelling, public relations, and creative direction.
  • Ensure brand consistency across meetings, education, publishing, research, advocacy, philanthropy, and membership.

Membership Growth & Engagement (20%)

  • Develop and implement strategies to increase membership recruitment, retention, and engagement.
  • Oversee full member lifecycle including acquisition, onboarding, renewal, engagement, and win-back campaigns through targeted audience segmentation.
  • Continuously evaluate and enhance the member value proposition.
  • Own membership revenue performance and establish annual dues revenue goals, forecasting renewal and recruitment performance.
  • Partner with volunteer leadership to identify emerging member needs and opportunities to strengthen engagement and growth.

Revenue Growth & Product Marketing (15%)

  • Partner with Education, Development, Research, Publishing, and Meetings teams to increase participation and awareness of Society programs.
  • Support sponsorship, fundraising, and product marketing initiatives through integrated campaigns.

Marketing Operations & Analytics (10%)

  • Establish department-wide KPIs and executive dashboards.
  • Oversee marketing technology, CRM optimization, automation, analytics, and AI implementation.
  • Measure campaign effectiveness and continuously improve performance.

Leadership & Team Development (10%)

  • Recruit, coach, mentor, and develop a high-performing team.
  • Establish clear expectations, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Foster a collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented culture.

Assume other special duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or related field; master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of progressively responsible marketing leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading integrated marketing strategies and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with membership organizations, healthcare, or nonprofit associations preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of digital marketing, CRM/AMS platforms, marketing automation, analytics, AI tools, and project management.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities while consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Executive presence with experience working with Boards, volunteer leaders, and senior executives.

Travel

Travel includes the AOSSM Annual Meeting, Board Meetings, and other meetings as required (approximately 10-15% annually).

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $130,000-150,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. AOSSM offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
