Lab Assistant

Job Description Job Description POSITION SUMMARY The Laboratory Assistant will follow the guidelines set by CLIA, and the CA Codes (bpc: 1212)that unlicensed laboratory personnel (" aides") cannot perform tests. Unlicensed persons require direct and constant supervision during the entire time they are assisting in analytical phase (bpc:1206 (a)(8)); unlicensed persons performing pre-analytical and post analytical require supervision and control of licensed person (bpc:1269). ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Receives specimens and checks all specimens for correct name and tests ordered.

Ensures adequacy and appropriateness of samples received. Labels specimens Prepares specimens for send out to reference lab. Discards specimens that are more than 7 days old, per established protocols.

Centrifuges specimens as needed. Sorts and numbers all specimens. Enters client and specimen data into the computer.

Ensures accuracy of information entered. Decontaminates the bench tops according to instructions. Wears all protective equipment as dictated by policy.

Follows all safety protocols as outlined in the safety manual. Identifies and pursues self improvement needs. Seeks coaching/mentoring when appropriate .

Complies with applicable legal requirements, standards, and procedures including, but not limited to, those within the Compliance Process, Code of Conduct, State and CLIA. Participates in required orientation, Compliance and HIPAA training programs. Reports concerns and suspected incidences of non-compliance.

Cooperates with monitoring and audit functions and investigations. Participates, as requested, in process improvement responsibilities. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills. Exercises accuracy and precision in completion of prescribed tasks.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or equivalent required. Prior laboratory experience preferred. Data entry/computer skills required.
