Job Summary The Commercial Gas Engineer will be responsible for the installation, servicing, maintenance, and repair of commercial gas systems within retail and commercial properties. This role requires strong technical expertise, a methodical approach to fault-finding, and a commitment to safety and compliance. The engineer will play a critical role in ensuring gas systems operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with all statutory and regulatory requirements, while minimising disruption to client operations.
Key Responsibilities Installation & Commissioning Install and commission commercial gas appliances and systems, including boilers, heaters, pipework, and associated controls, in line with specifications and regulations. Maintenance & Servicing Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and servicing of commercial gas systems to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation. Fault-Finding & Repairs Diagnose and repair faults on commercial gas equipment, responding efficiently to breakdowns and system failures.
Compliance & Safety Ensure all gas works comply with Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, industry standards, and company procedures. Complete all statutory documentation accurately. Emergency Response Attend emergency call-outs for gas-related incidents, including breakdowns, leaks, or system failures that may impact business operations.
Customer Liaison Provide a professional, customer-focused service, communicating clearly with site managers, clients, and stakeholders regarding works carried out and any required follow-up actions. Documentation & Reporting Maintain accurate records of inspections, servicing, repairs, and certifications, including gas safety documentation and compliance reports. Collaboration Work closely with other engineers, maintenance teams, project managers, and subcontractors as part of wider FM or construction projects.
Project Support Support larger projects such as refurbishments, plant replacements, and system upgrades, ensuring work is delivered on time and to specification. Health & Safety Adhere to all health and safety policies, including the correct use of PPE, safe systems of work, and risk assessments. Person Specification Qualifications and Experience Essential: Valid Commercial Gas Safe Registration (e.g.
COCN1 / CODNCO1 or equivalent). NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Plumbing & Heating, Mechanical Services, or equivalent. Minimum 23 years experience working in a commercial gas engineering role.
Proven experience in servicing, maintenance, and fault-finding on commercial gas appliances. Desirable: Additional qualifications in LPG, catering equipment, or specialist gas systems. Experience working within retail, hospitality, or large commercial environments.
Knowledge of BMS systems and energy-efficient plant. Skills and Abilities Essential: Strong technical knowledge of commercial gas systems and appliances. Excellent fault-finding and diagnostic capability.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics. Good organisational and time-management skills. Clear and professional communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a wider engineering team. Competent using digital systems for job logging and reporting. Personal Attributes Essential: High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
