Fleet Engineer

About the Role

Must-Have

• 4+ years of experience managing Linux-based edge device fleets.
• Hands-on experience with fleet management tools like BalenaCloud, balenaCLI, metropolis and container-based deployments.
• Strong experience with Docker containers and Docker Compose.
• CI/CD pipeline implementation using tools such as GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins.
• Container image build, optimization, and deployment practices.
• Version control using Git.
• Strong Linux administration skills (Ubuntu, Debian, Raspberry Pi OS).
• Device troubleshooting, remote diagnostics, and log analysis.
• Shell scripting (Bash).
• Network configuration and security for remote edge devices.
• Python for automation, deployment tools, and monitoring.
• API integration and automation scripting.

Good-to-Have

• Experience integrating edge devices with cloud platforms such as: Azure IoT, AWS IoT, Google Cloud IoT.
• Understanding of VPNs, firewalls, proxies, and secure communications.
• Familiarity with MQTT, REST APIs, WebSockets.
• Air-gapped/offline deployment strategies.
• Kubernetes/K3s at the edge.
• Device security, certificate management, and secure boot.
• Observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack).
• Experience with ARM-based devices (Raspberry Pi, Jetson, etc..).

Responsibilities

• Provision, configure, and onboard edge devices into BalenaCloud fleets.
• Manage device lifecycle activities including registration, updates, maintenance, and decommissioning.
• Deploy and monitor containerized applications across distributed edge device fleets.
• Configure fleet-wide environment variables, device settings, and application releases.
• Plan and execute OTA (Over-the-Air) software and firmware updates with minimal operational disruption.
