Position Summary The Laboratory Supervisor provides leadership, technical oversight, and operational management for the laboratory department. Reporting to the Laboratory Director, this role ensures all testing activities meet quality standards, regulatory requirements, and turnaround expectations while fostering a collaborative, accountable, and safety-driven culture. Key Responsibilities & Operational Leadership Oversee daily operations within the department, ensuring analyses meet holding times and turnaround goals Coordinate workflow, staffing, and instrument utilization to maintain efficiency Monitor KPIs (turnaround time, hold times, productivity) and implement corrective actions as needed Ensure compliance with SOPs, QA/QC procedures, and safety protocols Team Management & Development Supervise, coach, and develop a team Conduct performance evaluations, 1:1 meetings, and career development planning Identify training needs and support cross-training to build team capability Maintain accountability for team performance, engagement, and productivity Quality & Compliance Ensure adherence to EPA/Standard Methods methodologies, SW-846 methods, and NELAC/TNI standards.
Partner with QA to maintain accreditation and regulatory compliance Oversee data quality, method performance, and corrective actions Support method validation, implementation, and continuous improvement initiatives Communication & Collaboration Act as liaison between the Laboratory Director and team Collaborate with QA, Client Services, and other departments to resolve issues Contribute to leadership meetings and departmental planning Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, or related field 5+ years in an environmental testing laboratory 1–3+ years of leadership experience, including managing teams of 5 or more Strong experience with EPA/Standard Methods methods, SW-846, and NELAC/TNI requirements Familiarity with LIMS and high-throughput lab environments Proven ability to manage priorities, people, and performance Preferred Qualifications Direct experience in an laboratory (e.g., GC/MS, VOC/SVOC, extractions, wet chemistry) Experience with method development, validation, or instrumentation Key Competencies Strong technical and analytical problem-solving skills Effective leadership, coaching, and conflict resolution Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Commitment to quality, compliance, and continuous improvement Work Environment On-site role in Reading, PA May require overtime, weekends, or holidays Work involves handling chemicals and standard laboratory conditions Why Join M.J.
