English Teacher - Málaga & Buenos Aires

Alongside our Spanish courses we teach English, mostly to local learners in Málaga and Buenos Aires - people studying for work, for exams, or because they are tired of understanding English but not speaking it.

It is a different job from teaching Spanish here. Your students go home to a Spanish-speaking world every evening, so the classroom has to do more of the work.

What you would actually do

• Teach group and one-to-one English classes from A1 to C1.
• Prepare students for Cambridge and other recognised examinations.
• Teach adults and, depending on the campus and season, teenagers.
• Run conversation-focused sessions where the point is fluency rather than accuracy.
• Track progress and tell students the truth about it.
• Take part in school events and the social programme.

What we are looking for

• Native or near-native English.
• A recognised teaching certificate - CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, or a solid TEFL qualification. DELTA or a DipTESOL is a strong advantage.
• Experience teaching adults.
• Spanish at A2 or above helps you understand where your students keep tripping up, though classes run in English.
• The right to work in Spain or in Argentina, depending on the campus you apply to.
• Cambridge exam preparation experience is welcome.
• For any teaching that involves under-18s, Spanish law requires a clear criminal record certificate for work with minors (certificado negativo del Registro Central de Delincuentes Sexuales). We help you obtain it and we cover the cost.

About Vamos Academy

Vamos Academy is a Spanish and English language school with two campuses: one in Málaga, on Spain’s Costa del Sol, and one in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Students come to us from all over the world - some for a fortnight, some for a whole academic year, many through university exchange and Erasmus programmes.

We are a small enough school that you will know your students’ names and they will know yours. That is the point of us. It also means the person we hire has real influence over how the place runs.

Questions people ask before applying

Can I apply for both campuses?

Pick the one you actually want on the form and tell us in the final question if you would consider the other. We would rather know than guess.

Is a TEFL certificate enough?

Often yes, particularly with real classroom experience behind it. CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL carry more weight, and DELTA more again.

Do I need Spanish?

Not for the classroom. It helps enormously for everything around it, and for anticipating the mistakes Spanish speakers make in English.
