Engineering Management, Director
Booz Allen Hamilton
Job Description
As the Director of Engineering Management, you will lead and scale our engineering organization with a primary focus on people leadership, delivery predictability, and operational transparency.
You will be accountable for leading Squad and Engineering Managers and ensuring the engineering organization delivers on all the structured artifacts, status reporting, dashboards, and visibility commitments defined in our Engineering responsibilities. This role is heavily focused on building a high‑performing, accountable engineering culture while maintaining clear separation from deep technical architecture and implementation decisions, which sit with System Architects, Tech Leads, and individual engineering teams.
You will operate within a lean Product organization, including Product Management, Engineering, and Go‑to‑Market, and play a critical role in creating trust through transparency and predictable delivery. Due to the nature of work performed within this facility, U.S. citizenship is required.
- Lead, coach, mentor, and grow a team of Squad and Engineering Managers and the broader engineering organization.
- Establish, maintain, and continuously improve the required engineering artifacts and processes for every product and project, including Sprint and iteration execution plans with clear visibility into planned work and archived key architectural decisions.
- Provide timely, accurate, and transparent project status reporting, including burndown charts, critical path analysis, percentage completeness, and milestone progress, at end‑of‑sprint, key milestones, and feature readiness gates.
- Run or facilitate feature review and approval meetings at the end of each sprint and milestone to demonstrate progress and launch readiness.
- Proactively surface date, feature, quality trade‑offs, and drive timely alignment with Product Management.
- Deliver clear evidence of “go‑live” readiness and ongoing status reporting.
- Maintain and share dashboards for security, scalability, availability, cost, uptime, code quality, test coverage, and incident analysis.
- Ensure consistent execution of deployment safety practices, on‑call rotations, and operational processes.
- Implement and enforce secure‑by‑design processes, compliance requirements, threat‑modeling evidence, and coordination protocols before production changes via feature flags and release holds.
- Partner closely with Product Management on roadmap feasibility, prioritization input, trade‑off decisions, and rapid experimentation, while clearly owning the “how we deliver” and execution transparency.
- Collaborate with technical leadership such as System Architects and Tech Leads on architecture and infrastructure topics as needed for planning and risk management.
- Work effectively with CIO and Technical Enablement teams when platform decisions impact delivery.
You have:
- 10+ years of experience in engineering
- 5+ years of experience in a progressive engineering leadership role
- Experience leading multiple delivery teams, such as squads or ARTs, in a scaled agile environment including SAFe, Scrum, or Kanban
- Experience implementing transparency mechanisms such as structured status reporting, dashboards, artifacts, trade‑off visibility, and predictable delivery cadences
- Experience building and scaling engineering management layers
- Ability to translate delivery status and risks clearly for Product, GTM, and executive audiences
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering
Nice to have:
- Experience as a Release Train Engineer (RTE) or Director of Engineering in a SAFe environment
- Experience with modern delivery practices such as CI/CD, DevOps, or observability
- Experience in security‑conscious or regulated environments
- Experience scaling engineering teams from early or mid‑stage to 30+ engineers
- Possession of excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering
