Role Purpose:
- The Engineering Lead provides hands-on technical and people leadership for a single engineering team.
- The role translates the platform direction, target architecture, engineering standards, and priorities defined centrally into effective team execution, strong engineering practices, and clear individual accountability.
- The Engineering Lead works in close partnership with the assigned Product Manager. The Product Manager defines product priorities, scope, and expected outcomes. The Engineering Lead translates these into an executable technical plan, assigns work across the team, and ensures effective delivery.
Core Responsibilities:
Technical and Delivery Leadership:
- Translate centrally defined platform direction, target architecture, and engineering priorities into clear technical execution for the team.
- Work closely with the assigned Product Manager to convert agreed priorities and outcomes into a realistic and executable team plan.
- Assign and coordinate work across Software Engineers and Quality Engineers based on priorities, skills, capacity, dependencies, and technical needs.
- Maintain clarity on ownership, sequencing, delivery expectations, and progress, adapting assignments when circumstances change.
- Guide design, implementation, reviews, and delivery while remaining hands-on where needed.
- Ensure the team follows agreed architectural principles, technical standards, security requirements, and platform guardrails.
- Identify technical risks, dependencies, bottlenecks, and quality concerns early.
- Raise scope, sequencing, feasibility, or capacity concerns with the Product Manager and Engineering Manager, and drive the necessary trade-off discussions.
- Promote the reuse of shared capabilities and prevent unnecessary duplication, local optimisation, and technical divergence.
- Involve the relevant Staff Engineer, Architecture leader, or specialist function when decisions require broader alignment.
People and Team Leadership:
- Manage the Software Engineers and Quality Engineers assigned to the team.
- Set clear expectations, objectives, responsibilities, and development priorities.
- Provide regular coaching, feedback, performance management, and career development.
- Create a healthy and accountable environment where people can perform, grow, collaborate, and raise concerns openly.
- Maintain visibility of individual workload, performance, engagement, skills, and development needs.
- Address performance and behavioural concerns directly, escalating significant issues to the Engineering Manager.
- Support hiring and onboarding by providing input on the capabilities and skills required within the team.
AI-Native Engineering:
- Drive AI adoption across the teams daily engineering and operational work.
- Embed AI-assisted coding, reviews, testing, refactoring, incident triage, documentation, and knowledge retrieval into the teams workflow.
- Reinforce secure, responsible, and compliant AI use.
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity, quality, and operational effectiveness through AI.
Engineering Excellence:
- Ensure high standards of code quality, scalability, security, reliability, observability, documentation, and operational excellence.
- Strengthen technical ownership, accountability, and engineering discipline within the team.
- Coach engineers to improve technical depth, autonomy, judgement, and craftsmanship.
- Share patterns, lessons, and improvements across teams to strengthen consistency within Engineering.
Authority and Accountability Boundaries:
The Engineering Lead is accountable for:
- People leadership and individual performance within the assigned team.
- Assigning and coordinating work based on the priorities agreed with the Product Manager.
- Technical execution, engineering quality, and operational reliability.
- Ensuring the team follows the agreed architecture, standards, and platform direction.
- Maintaining clarity on ownership, sequencing, dependencies, and delivery expectations.
- Developing engineers and strengthening technical ownership.
- Identifying and escalating risks or issues that cannot be resolved within the team.
The role is empowered to:
- Assign the teams day-to-day work within agreed product and engineering priorities.
- Determine the technical execution approach within agreed architecture and platform guardrails.
- Distribute responsibilities based on skills, capacity, dependencies, and delivery needs.
- Manage performance, development, workload, and role clarity.
- Challenge unclear requirements, conflicting priorities, weak technical approaches, unrealistic plans, and quality risks.
- Recommend changes to scope, sequencing, design, team composition, and ways of working.
- Escalate unresolved priority, capacity, people, delivery, or technical issues.
- The role does not independently set or change product priorities. The Product Manager remains accountable for product priorities, scope, and expected outcomes.
- The role also does not independently own platform strategy, target architecture, organisational design, capacity allocation, or strategic hiring priorities. These responsibilities remain with the VP of Engineering, Engineering Manager, Product leadership, and relevant central functions.
Impact and Scope:
- Leads the people and technical execution of one engineering team.
- Owns the quality, reliability, and technical effectiveness of the teams services and components.
- Connects product priorities and centrally defined technical direction with practical implementation.
- Strengthens engineering culture through example, coaching, feedback, and hands-on leadership.
- Improves team productivity through AI-native practices and technical excellence.
- The assigned team and area of responsibility may change as priorities, platform needs, and organisational requirements evolve.
Reporting Lines:
- Reports to the Engineering Manager.
- Manages the Software Engineers and Quality Engineers assigned to the team.
- Works in close partnership with the assigned Product Manager.
- Has a dotted-line relationship with the relevant Staff Engineer for architecture alignment and technical standards.
- Collaborates closely with UX Designers, Quality Engineering, Architecture, shared platform functions, and other Engineering Leads.
- Escalates people, delivery, capacity, and organisational issues through the Engineering Manager.
Escalates technical and architectural issues through the relevant Staff Engineer or Architecture leader, depending on the nature of the issue.
