Controls Engineer – Special Purpose Machinery Location: London Salary: Up to £70,000 + Benefits Job Type: Permanent | Full-Time We are recruiting for an experienced Controls Engineer to join a growing engineering business delivering bespoke special purpose machinery projects across a range of advanced manufacturing and industrial sectors. This is an excellent opportunity for a Controls Engineer with strong Siemens and/or Beckhoff PLC experience who enjoys working on full lifecycle automation projects — from concept and design through to commissioning and customer handover. The Role As a Controls Engineer, you will play a key role in the development of automated machinery and turnkey systems for high-profile industrial clients.
You will be involved in both office-based design work and onsite commissioning activities across the UK and occasionally internationally. Key Responsibilities PLC software development using Siemens TIA Portal and/or Beckhoff TwinCAT HMI and SCADA development Electrical controls design and system architecture Full project lifecycle involvement from concept through to FAT/SAT Machine commissioning, testing and troubleshooting Integration of motion control, servo drives, robotics and safety systems Supporting continuous improvement and innovation across machinery projects Working closely with mechanical, electrical and project engineering teams Producing technical documentation and customer support materials Requirements Proven experience as a Controls Engineer, Automation Engineer or PLC Engineer Strong Siemens and/or Beckhoff PLC programming experience Experience working on special purpose machinery, automated production lines or bespoke machinery projects Knowledge of motion control, drives, sensors and industrial communication protocols Ability to read and understand electrical schematics Experience commissioning automated systems onsite Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills Full UK driving licence Desirable Skills Siemens TIA Portal, S7, WinCC Beckhoff TwinCAT 3 Servo motion control systems Safety PLCs and machine safety standards Industrial networking (Profinet, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP) What’s On Offer Salary up to £70,000 depending on experience Opportunity to work on technically challenging bespoke machinery projects Career progression within a growing automation engineering business Exposure to cutting-edge automation technology Pension scheme Overtime and travel allowances where applicable
