Job Title: Engineer 2 Job ID: 87477 Location: Burnaby, British Columbia Overview As an Intermediate Engineer of our Telecom Engineering team, you will play a key role in shaping the next generation of BC Hydro’s telecommunications network. You will work on high-performance transport systems and critical connectivity solutions that support utility operations, SCADA, grid protection, and cybersecurity across the province. What you will be doing Support the design of telecom networks and circuits, ensuring the reliability, performance, and security needed to support real-time grid operations and future utility technologies.
Support in drawings, material ordering, material management for the construction of telecom infrastructure including microwave radio links, fiber optic networks, WiMAX radio network, satellite communications, power line carrier links, LTE, leased facilities, IP/MPLS networks, digital cross-connect switches, SONET multiplexer, Tetra/VHF/UHF mobile radio, teleprotection, and -48 VDC power systems. Partner closely with project managers and construction teams to meet safety, cost, and milestones. You will resolve complex field issues, guide construction teams, and provide essential technical leadership during installation, testing, and commissioning.
Ensure all engineering work complies with EGBC requirements, company standards, and industry best practices, reinforcing a culture of technical integrity and professional accountability. Participate in site visits and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to confirm design intent, support field implementation, and contribute to maintenance and emergency restoration activities when critical telecom systems are impacted. What you must have Bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering (or a closely related discipline) from a recognized post‑secondary institution.
A minimum of 2 years of progressive and comprehensive engineering experience in the design and engineering of telecommunications systems. Design experience with at least one of the following telecom technologies: Microwave radio links, fiber optic networks (DWDM/OTN), WiMAX radio network, satellite communications, power line carrier links, LTE, leased facilities, digital cross‑connect switches, SONET multiplexer, Tetra/VHF/UHF mobile radio, teleprotection, -48V DC power systems and grounding; and TDM (SONET/PDH) and IP/MPLS circuits, including circuits carrying teleprotection and RAS. Experience in IP/MPLS architecture and design—covering IPv4/IPv6, OSPF, IS‑IS, BGP, MPLS/VPN, EVPN, Segment Routing, QoS, Traffic Engineering, and security across large‑scale LAN/WAN environments.
Experience configuring and deploying Nokia IP/MPLS platforms including L2/L3VPN and QoS technologies. Demonstrated excellence in technical writing and verbal communication. Ability to work independently, take initiative on complex problems, and seek guidance when necessary.
A solid understanding of project management processes, contract management, and construction oversight. A valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing is required for site visits and field support. University graduate in applied science or engineering.
Registered Engineer‑in‑Training or Geoscientist‑in‑Training with Engineers & Geoscientists BC or another jurisdiction and/or eligible for registration as such with Engineers & Geoscientists BC. Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards. Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software.
